Lifting a chair with one arm, is extremely hard. But most people in the comments said they could easily do it. So I put a chair in the middle of the city, giving everyone who lifts it,
$100. The rules are simple. Put you hand here, put your forearm on the ground and lift the chair straight up in the air. And of course hundreds of people stood around the chair, wanting to give this a try.

It’s only easy… until you do it yourself.

Philip was actually pressing the chair towards his face to give it a balance. This is actually unfair

It is simple physics: Most of the mass is distributed far away and opposite to the grasp point, thus the torque is massive. It requires very strong wrists.
If you can lift a dumbbel of lets say 10 kgs and the chair is also 10 kg, the difference is that the torque on your wrist with the dumbell is (very simplified) 10 x 0.1 m = 1, while with the chair is 10 x 1 m = 0 (again, massively simplfied, just assuming point masses at 10 cm as the center of your hand an 1 m as the mass center of the chair).

In summary, that means that lifing a 10 kg chair is equivalent of lifting a 100 kg dumbbel for your wrist.

To lift the chair, you want the center of gravity above the chair leg. You would have be very strong and know what you are doing to do this, or cheat a a little. The easiest way to lift a chair like this (and it is not very easy even doing this) is to pull the chair towards you and then push it away as you start to lift. You would then be using momentum to help you reduce the moment needed to lift the chair. Once the centre of gravity is over the hand, then for most people the lift is easy. But oh boy, is the set up hard.

Browney lifted that chair with ease. He's stronger than the average human. You're now in my "people not to mess with" list Mr Browney sir.

There's a trick to make it easy, though. Not many people seem to know. You make the chair lean a bit _towards_ yourself, and then start lifting... That way, the centre of mass stays closer to being vertically above your grip, decreasing the torque due to gravity.

I'm 13 and I have definitely picked up a lot of chairs like this when I was a kid

There is a trick to it, you need to sort of press the base of your hand against the chair and it makes it much easier
