I am an American. I have been a resident of Taiwan for 38 years. I did study and travel extensively in China many decades ago. Taiwan is the real China. People are very friendly and polite and they definitely adhere to a strong code of ethics and morals in their every day lives, revere their elders, and hold Chinese traditions and religious practices as being very dear, even the very modern high-tech youth. Life here reminds me of living in the earlier better decades of the US (60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s) when people were financially stable, crime was very low, society was MUCH more civil and cohesive, and there was always great optimism about achieving one's dreams with hard work no matter how high those aspirations were. Oddly, Taiwan has been a very safe and peaceful place to live, a bubble outside of the chaos and strife of the outside world - a great refuge of sorts. I hope the old adage, "All good things must come to an end, " doesn't materialize in Taiwan. That would be such a great pity. The Taiwanese have worked so very hard to build Taiwan into the wonderful nation it has become and I accompanied it through much of that growth and contributed to that in many very significant ways. Hopefully, it won't all be destroyed over unfounded historical claims and ego.

China has not taken into account the people of Taiwan would never accept them or their laws. Taiwan is not like Hong Kong and Taiwan‘s been free for too long.
