I love animating and wanted to get it out there that there are free and cheaper alternatives to industry leaders like Toonboom, Flash/Animate CC and TVPaint. Be sure to take a look at the software and decide which one is best for you! I've left links down below to each of the software and the shows/films/YT videos I referenced and tutorials on how to animate in Krita and Sketchbook if you want to check them out!

Why is it that creators always have to pay an arm and a leg to get nice things?

Fantastic tutorials, I can tell you've worked in the entertainment industry because you totally get the "get to the point" aspect. Please keep doing what you're doing and your format is amazing.

Blender!

It's worth mentioning that Blender has the full rigging toolset, as well as frame animation. In the 3D realm, Freestyle offers some great NPR rendering options for linework and all that. Finally, the new Eevee engine is capable of great toon shaders, if you know how to wrangle a node network.

All in all, steep learning curve if you want to get the full power out if it, but totally worth it! All it costs is time and persistence.

Somehow, this is the clearest and most useful explanation of 2D software so far. Really interesting, especially about Open Toonz! I'd assumed it was mostly a gimicky software but I'll definitely have to give it a look! :) What would you say is your no.1 tip for learning Harmony? I've been meaning to get into it but it has so many features and just feels a bit intimidating to a newbie!

the fact that these are so expensive is a crime. they act like they are krakatoa and have extremely powerful software. im so glad for krita and sketchbook and open being free. i used to use easytoons back in the day. and blender is free and its more advanced lol.

i hope your channel blows up. its alot more honest, grounded, and full of talent compared to the most popular animations channels out there. when you get 100k subs i will be here to celebrate :)

I haven't played with animation for years. I can't believe how much the softwares (especially the 3D ones) have been improved.

Clip Studio is amazing, being able to pretty much use full use of its features (Brushes, Materials, etc) thats made for illustrating but can also be done for animating allowing you to get really detailed and complex animations conveniently. Else animating traditionally using illustrating programs then render the images as a sequence then bake them together.

Thank you for this! The only animation software I've used is flipaclip and I have a very hard time using the brushes and pencils. It's also really difficult to figure out which one is the most fluid fps. And finding out that the breadwinner was made in tvpaint was actually really helpful since I might find it easier to animate with and it also looks more fluid than flipaclip. I also think the breadwinner is lovely.

Currently, I use Toon Boom Harmony 16 Premium and edit in After Effects CC and Sony Vegas Pro 16 but your reviews of each of these softwares gives me hope that other newer creators who are beginning to get into the industry won't have to struggle with money because their interests got the better of them. Animation is such a hard thing, but note that using professional programmes does not make you a professional. I can't say I'm a professional really, I do commissions but I do not take up job offers, etc for my art. Art is still more-so a hobby to me as I am more leaning to the writing industry but art is what you make it: it can be stressful or it can be a breeze. Everyone has unique art that the world hasn't seen yet so it's wonderful seeing new artists eagerly come into the scene. I just really don't want to see them give an arm or a leg to afford these softwares.
