HOMESCHOOL Writing PLANS for Next Year // Writing & Composition 2023-2024 // 5th and 7th grade

It’s that time of year!!

All the homeschoolers out there stuck in the trenches of February can now come out! It’s time to reflect and brainstorm ideas for the upcoming school year.

Are you looking for guidance and ideas for writing and composition? I’m chatting (very informally… in my truck… at soccer practice 😂) about some of the writing curricula we used this year, reviewing potential curricula we may use, and discussing options for supplementing next year.

This eclectic approach may not work for all families, but I’m a big believer in being creative and tailoring curriculum to our needs. This usually results in what probably looks like a jumbled, hodgepodge pile of mess.

Regardless, I hope you find this helpful! If you did, you know what to do 👍🏻

❤️ Thank you for watching!

You look so pretty without makeup! And car videos mean great natural lighting so that's a win, in my book. Plus, your truck looks very clean. I'm jealous 🤣

I really enjoyed this video.

I saw an idea somewhere and have been thinking about it a lot ever since. It was about some sort of writing program, but the man I was watching said that to improve spelling, forget about some fancy spelling program. Just take 10 words they frequently misspell and practice those until they've mastered them. Then a new batch of 10 and so on, until they are mostly spelling everything correctly. I guess we tend to mostly use the same words over and over, and you'll be considered a good speller if you get those down! I agree about AAS being teacher intensive and time consuming. I don't intend on ever using it again. As of now, I think I'd rather turn out bad spellers than to use that program again. After all, I know LOTS of other bad spellers, and it doesn't seem to have held them back! My intention going forward, is to try the approach I just described. To me, it makes a lot of sense that it would work effectively!

Lastly, I agree with the commenter who said you clearly care about working with your kids where they're at and in a way that will help them the most. I love seeing that!

I like your videos. You don’t need to apologize about your surroundings. Being less apologetic, makes the video more enjoyable.

Thank you for sharing! I very much enjoy your videos. I now am entering our 2nd year of Build Your Library with my 9 and 12 yr old boys because of your videos and information.

What I like best about your videos is that you so thoroughly go through your child’s learning and needs. I can see how you are by their sides and engaged with your children by what you share here. I've been homeschooling my 4 boys most of 11 years, and it gives me motivation to hear what your family is doing. Thank you.

We used Moving Beyond the Page’s spelling program. It’s all online and teaches them the rules. It made a huge difference for us!

By your description of killgallon and writing with ease- writing and rhetoric is a combination of both. It teaches the concept and then the student does sentence play and finally the writing assignment. And if you buy it from them, it includes the audio for the reading part.
For spelling I use LOE online. It includes phonics, spelling, grammar. If you use the books- it includes vocabulary as well. It has all 3 levels in the book. And online it includes 2 levels.
I enjoy watching these brainstorming videos, it gives me ideas or confirmation of what I’m using 😝 thanks for sharing!

My son wasn’t responding to All About Spelling, Evan Moore Spelling and Spectrum spelling so we switched to Memoria Press Traditional Spelling and it’s working!

Could you give us a review of BYL 5? Do you find that River of Voices can be used along side it?

I feel like we are in a very similar place with our 12 year olds. She hates writing anything I ask her to write. I'm trying to make it as interesting as possible to combat push back. But at some point she has to learn to write effectively. Looking into Killgallon. Thanks for the suggestion!

Do you have any updated thoughts on Writing with Skill? I really want to try Write by Number, but the $300 price tag has me continuing to research alternatives… hoping I might land on something equally effective that can be purchased for a fraction of the cost. 😆 Just curious if you ended up continuing with this and liking it for the rest of middle school.

I also feel like my daughter's spelling has dropped since we stopped using All About Spelling, but it takes so much time! I think I'm just going to try to use the tiles app with it and see if that helps.
