Here are the Top 7 facts about Lexus' new IS500 F-Sport Performance that you didn't know:
What does the F stand for?
Separate from the volume Lexus engines, in this case the IS350 or IS200t, the F in IS500 F-Sport signifies Lexus’ high performance marquees. The F literally stands for Flagship and Fuiji Speedway where Lexus’ performance vehicles are tested.
IS500 F-Sport Performance Exhaust
The quad exhaust from its much older brother the 2008 IS F, but performance wise the two sport sedans are not alike. The 500 is a lot more refined and not as tuned for the track as the earlier gen IS F.
The First of Lexus F Sport Performance Class
The F sport for most of the Lexus lineup is just an appearance package with no upgrades to the engine or suspension, but when it comes to the F like 2008’s IS F and Lexus’s current RC F they deliver blistering speed with unmatched refined luxury comfort. The Fs of yesteryear were fast but when it comes to the F-Sport Performance we can come to think of this as a middle ground between full on track car and mundane cruiser sorta like Cadillac’s short run and now defunct V-Sport series. Early reports and reviews of Cadillac’s V-Sport series were so good many felt they didn't need a full on V but when it came enthusiasts rejoiced. Lexus may have the same trick up its sleeve, so maybe we can expect a full on F performance variant sometime in the near future.
500 actually stands for the 5.0 liter engine
Like its brother from another generation the IS500 does sport a 5.0 liter V8 and a stellar attention to detail of the fine tuned exhaust note. The 500 is actually representative of the monster under the hood unlike its big brother or grandfather depending on how you look at it, LS500 which is not indicative of its power plant, as it sports a twin turbocharged 3.5 liter V6, a first for the flagship sedan.
Not Quite As Fast As The F
The 2008 IS F is still slightly faster than the 2021 IS500 F-Sport. The 08 sport sedan pulls from a stop to 60 in just 4.3 seconds compared to the IS500’s 4.5 second 0-60 time. The aim of the IS to put a smile on customers faces. Lexus is focused on feel, fun and sound.
The Sculpted Hood
The hood has been raised nearly 2 inches and receives sculpted center character lines, while the front bumper and fenders have been lengthened to help accommodate the vehicle’s naturally aspirated V8 muscle.
Lighter Wheels
IS 500 will come standard with exclusive 19-inch split-10-spoke Enkei alloy wheels. Which are approximately 1-pound lighter per wheel in front and 2 pounds lighter per wheel in the rear, compared to the standard 19-inch F SPORT wheel.
