I was always more of a Big Country man myself, but this tune has an irresistible magnetism and it speaks so much of its time and place: a working class bloke buying into the Thatcherite promise of opportunity, of rising to the top (a hollow lie, of course, or at a terrible price, cf. Mark Renton; anyway, my reading of it).
