Star forts (bastion forts) come in various configurations, flavours and sizes. Some have been maintained while others have slowly disappeared into urban expansion, or have been demolished completely. This video explains what bastion forts are, in general how they work and what some of the main components are. It will tell you how and why they came to be along with what made them obsolete. Also how they differ from medieval forts.

If you believe these were built by aliens, "ancient power stations" or to do with water management, please don't bother to comment. They are not. They are defensive works from a time in which building these things this way simply made tactical sense. As explained, or check out the list of sources in the description. Whatever fiction you are watching/reading that says otherwise, please post about it somewhere else. Thank you. PS: And yes, I know they are all over the world - most of them built by European colonists, but not all - this is only mentioned briefly near the end of the video.

Fun fact: The Statue of Liberty in New York harbor rests atop a star fort, Fort Wood.

Having a dutch call your home city “gorgeous” is quite the compliment. I have to say that most of the wonderfull stuff was build by dutch architects, which our kings had a soft spot for in the 1600’s.

This brought back a long forgotten childhood memory of time spent building indestructible structures out of those coloured wooden blocks children have. I used to put a little toy person in them, create a fortress with multiple layers and then ‘bomb’ them by dropping blocks on top to see how long they would stay intact and protect my person. Bear in mind I was a little girl doing this of around 8-10 years old. But I had an older brother as my role model. So the idea of them designing these fortresses like this with multiple layers for protection against cannon fire etc makes intuitive sense to me. I think I would have probably been able to give them some good advice if I had been around in the day, lol. 😂

Are there any stories of how they build the star forts? I mean, with horse and buggy?

Castles were not built high and on mountains to rain down arrows on approaching enemies but to limit approaches the enemies can take, although being on a tall peak makes it impossible to ressuply your castle during a siege so basically such castles were merely a time delay for reinforcements to arrive

Thanks for making this video. I didn’t expect the people in the comment section to go so crazy. But it was fun to read the comments.

Hamburg in northern Germany was not a "Star Fort", but had its city walls modernized and had bastions, pre-wall bastions and 200x cannons on the wall in the 17th century.
There is an impressive model of this in our local museum for history. In the city, you can only see the zig-zag of the bastions by the old moat at the "Plant un Blohm" park. If you know the layout, you can see the street that works like a half-circle on the northside of the river. The fortifaction in combination with the harbor was so strong, that Hamburg got not attacked during the 30-year war in the 17th century. A feat sadly not many cities in Germany can claim for the 30-year war.

The Fort in Malacca built by the Portuguese when they captured the maritime city 1511 has similar designs and five bastions. Remnants of the fort still exist till today with parts of it excavated.

If you think fortifications are "cool",
Copenhagen is indeed a great place to visit.

You can follow their development from the 11th century walls of Absalon Castle,
over the 16th century works around the center
to the 19th century western wall and its forts.

Not to mention the magnificent works around the Citadel
and Kronborg & Hillerød Casstle up north :)

Nice! Though in modern times we're nearing 1800 known star forts. Even located one in the frozen wastes of Russia. My problem with the cannon hypothesis is that several of the newly discovered starforts are in areas that havd no history of conclict. Some ruins of these forts in areas so remote that there's no strategic military advantage associated to the location. I believe it possible there is more to this than we're able to account for.

I'm curious why so many star forts exist in the America's and most have been neglected and/or built overtop of. Please do a video letting us know where those come from and who built them. I believe the Statue of Liberty is also built on a star fort and I'm wondering why? Thanks so much for your answers in advance!
