On July 23, 1999, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory was placed in orbit by Space Shuttle Columbia STS-93. Chandra is a telescope designed to detect X-ray emission from very hot regions of the universe like exploded stars, clusters of galaxies, and matter around black holes. This Air and Space Live Chat featured astronaut Eileen Collins, who was commander of STS-93, and scientists Dr. Rodolfo Montez Jr. and Annie Blackwell who work with Chandra data. I was at Kennedy Space Center & watched the launch of the Chandra - it was magnificent!💜🙏

P.S. I also tell everyone that it was the first time there had ever been a female Commander! Col. Eileen Collins was great - composed & skilled👍👍💜🙏

P.S.S. Third time the Charm ...👍👍 the burst of hydrogen was alarming, he rocket almost appeared to stall & i was afraid it wasn't going to make it into Space - The Challenger immediately came to mind 💜🙏
