Kiteboarding | New Rules Of Navigation?

Relax, I'm not actually saying we change the rules. Well... I am but only in flat water and trick specific spots! Ultimately, its on the locals to make their own rules and us to respect the location. Flat water is highly sought after and should be using in a way that everyone gets a go.

Thanks for the shout out at the beginning there! This is a subject matter near and dear to my grumpy little heart.

Thanks for bringing this up! I returned to wind sports this year as a wingding after a 20 year surfing break. I was surprised when a windsurfer yelled at me while I was on starboard tack, which to my understanding always had right-of-way. Turns out there are local conventions that override navigation rules laid out by sailors. The challenge is when you're new to a spot (or sport) it's hard to get the low-down -- people tell you about the rocks and wind shadows but not right of way. I think a few hand-painted signs would go a long way. I ride mountain bikes in a few places where someone posted signs like "uphill has right-of-way" or "loop to the left on weekends" -- it helps a lot.

Thank you for talking about this, far too many people are unaware. It'd be super cool if you could do one for strong wind/ big air spots like Capetown too!!

good to get this conversation going - have seen experienced locals taking over - be it flat water spots or the best lines for waves. a rotation system makes sure everyone gets a clear run each time for the price of a small wait... and gives a clear area for beginners to avoid too.

thanks for posting this man, I totally agree with this! I tried to enforce this at my local spot as well, and most of wake-style guys really understand it. But problem is the rest of boosting guys desn't seems to care and do whatever and rest of newbies follows lol!

Get out of my —. JK I agree more experienced riders naturally do the flow, it’s often more novice riders who understandably often don’t get it. So don’t be upset if someone talks to you on the beach after your session and just wants to inform you. Cheers good video

I’m new.. this helps a lot. I definitely don’t want to be the newbie pissing people off 🥸😂

I agree! It's similar to snowboarding with riders in the bleachers while one is trying to hit the features... it's a dangerous crime unless everyone goes one at a time. It's like the landing strip at an airport, unless we treat it like kangaroo court...

This summer I experienced the queue in hood river. Its actually really fun to share the spot with great riders and makes you wanna push yourself!

One thing I do struggle with at times is when you’re working on something, you’ll crash a lot and depending on the crash it’ll take some time for you to get out of the way. Any thoughts on that?

What do you do when you decided to dedicate your riding to big air style, then someone does a stazzy handle pass right in your face sending you into a deep depression, ultimately making you question if you should have or not thrown your wake style boots away?
