Have you ever wondered how a simple bolt can mysteriously shift colors when submerged in water? The answer is titanium's unique properties. By applying voltage, a thin transformative oxide layer forms on the metal surface creating a stunning color change. For example, immerse titanium in an electrolyte solution, add a bit of voltage and watch as it magically turns into vibrant shades of blue or purple. As you increase the voltage, the oxide layer thickens causing the titanium to shift the color like yellow or orange. This principle allows titanium to multi-dimensional colors without a single drop of dye or pigment. It's a fascinating way to craft organic beauty from pure science.

You missed the most interesting part! The oxide layer is actually clear, not colored. It gets its color from whats called the thin film effect, where a thin film of anything transparent will reflect specific wavelengths. This is the same effect that gives oil on water its rainbowy appearance, and bubbles their color. The color changes because the thickness of the film increases when more charge is passed through the metal

Same way blued steel works only it’s with heat. You get all these different colors depending on what temperature you heat it. I went to an art studio once and this dude was “painting” a scene of an aspen grove on a mountain in the setting sun and it was beautiful, hard to believe you can get so much color out of steel and heat. People are amazing.

That's really sometime very cool !!

Can't wait to try this. I'm gonna grab my toaster and go in the tub and see what colors I can turn into

I've been saying for years Titanium is a magic metal mainly for how alloys with it in it have special properties but this really confirms it

Electro anodization. You can do the same thing with aluminum too

What is your favorite color?
Me: Titanium

Maybe I should try this with my titanium ring

Some things to mention:
Vanadium has similar properties, shifting through+2/+3/+4/+5 oxides, each with a unique color.
This process is a one way trip (you can return the electerons but it's so difficult and inefficient people won't)

Worked as an Opthalmic engineer manufacturing eye surgery instruments and this was how we would finish the titanium tools, pretty cool process!

Aight that’s cool af and that explains how those nice exhausts made out of titanium are multi colored

You can oxidize titanium in an oven with under 200 degrees Celsius while controlling the flow of air-gas (mainly oxygen) guaranteeing the quality/oxidation level. Oxidized titanium (100% oxidized) is a great conductor of thermal energy and would out perform any metal in most applications; only limited due to cost and availability...

The bubbles forming of the wire mesh is actually pure hydrogen produced from electrolysis 😅
Extremely explosive 😂

So that's how they made the tip of my exhaust

And...THAT is why I love my Titanium full exhaust on my motorcycle...LOVE the various colours on titanium!!

Him: Titanium can change color on oxidation.
Iphone guys: yeah boiii..👽

This also works with steel and heat, if you heat steel enough an oxid layer can form and depending on the temperature it can have many different colors
