I'm sorry the last half of the video was blacked out! I went to bed right after posting so I didn't notice... Maybe I shouldn't trust Submagic so much...😅

There was an example of this happening after Japan opened up. A British person was crossing paths with the procession of the daimyo of Kagoshima. And if you don’t kneel to the procession it was a signed of disrespect, he was told repeatedly to kneel but didn’t listen, and he even insulted the daimyo, so he was cut down.

Yeah, I can't imagine any armed aristocrat ever abusing that power.

Thank you for this. While overly romanticizing the samurai and believing they were nobler than they were is certainly a problem, the reverse is also true, and over the years I've felt like a lot of academically minded people have been on a bit of a crusade to portray samurai as massive hypocrites and horrible tyrants devoid of any and all of the honor their status and rank was supposed to come with. Most samurai were probably just people who were taught warrior-aristocratic ideals that sometimes lived up to them and sometimes didn't. Some samurai were probably dregs of the earth, and some were only a step removed from the ideal.

I think another rule was that the Samurai had to cut his offender down on the spot, and if they let the offender go, they weren't allowed to hold a grudge and kill them later. Also, in the 90s Jidaigeki "Shinsengumi Keppuuroku, " when Serizawa Kamo sliced down a Sumo wrestler that taunted him in the street, other characters like Isami called it 無礼打ち burei uchi but maybe that wasn't the official name.

Ok ...but what about the stories of testing out a new katana on a random commoner?

The rules governing this practice also changed during different periods in Japan's history, sometimes significantly.
Unless I am mistaken of course.

I am sure in some places nobody really cared about commoners and sometimes some drunk samurai just randomly did it and no one knew

No puedo creer que ya tenga pista de audio en español. Puedo leer y entender en inglés, pero resulta más fácil comprender en la lengua materna. ¡Se agradece!

For those wondering about the audio dubs, if you click on the three dots in the upper right corner of the video, it looks like there should be an audio track menu option that should allow you to change it back to English 😊 at least i have that option. Hope this helps anyone who wanted the English track 🙏

Still seems like a shitty license to kill

"There had to be no other way to resolve the situation."

Other than murder? That makes for a pretty short list of situations that could possibly qualify.

The act of Samurai killing commoners may have been rare but their nobility is definitely a work of fiction and retroactive history telling. They were no different than common thugs and gangs who bullied and pushed for their own power.

I visited Japan and I got the feeling that everyone was so formal and "polite" out of a collective trauma from a time when doing anything out of line would mean getting your throat slit by a samurai. There was no warmth or sense of morality behind the "politeness" and rules, it felt motivated by fear.

Fascinating information. Thank you, Shogo-san for the valuable education you provide. I'm always extremely interested and gratified by your offerings.

They developed a whole new technique of drawing your sword in order to avoid drawing it, as even showing your blade outside the right conditions could have you killed

Kinda hard to argue a case without a head though

Its like self defense

You need witnesses, a possible threat, and no alternative for a resolution.

Thank you so much for that explanation Shogo

It sounds more like laws of self defense rather than a right to kill.
