Cities on Fire: The Urban Heat Island Effect

The deadly extreme heat that continues to grip the United States is far worse in the country's major cities, where what's known as "the heat island effect" can make temperatures 20 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than less dense surrounding areas. And with global warming, experts expect it will only get worse.

Great to see this. Iam a tree lover. Tree experts have been pretty much begging cities to get their act together on increasing tree canopy for a long time. It takes approximately 5 years to get a fresh planted tree fully rooted and fending for itself. Maybe it will now take more with hotter weather. Trees obviously aren't a panacea, but I certainly pray that cities take real action to step up their game regarding tree canopy. Trees do better when they are within "touching distance" from other trees similar to forest conditions. Too often gaps in the canopy are seen as helpful when this is rarely the case. Mature trees, the backbone of our urban forests also need to be better protected.

I've been trying too tell people, reps, leadership, acquaintances and friends for YEARS!
ASPHALT, rooftops and roads multiplys heat. Your parking lots, play grounds absorb this heat and rises too were it cant over come the cooler air. The cooler air cant settle and the hotter air can't escape. It becomes negatively balanced. It creates an invisible barrier like walls too your sides and above not allowing air movement in the area and clouds cant drop, let alone move into those areas due too those barriers. Take out the asphalt or coat it with white durable elastomeric coatings and you will FEEL the change, I PROMISE!

People act like they don’t know that it’s hot 🥵 af in the summertime every And it’s not like it’s extremely hot every summer it’s usually regular hot for where you live but have a week or two where it’s extremely hot 🥵 then goes back to regular But usually if it’s a hot summer then here in the mid west we’ll have a mild winter unless it’s and numbered year and we have managed to escape two years with a mild winter then we’re going to hammered but I believe it’s like that every where if it’s a mild hurricane season in the south then the summer is going to be hot af in the south but if it’s not and it’s an off the chain hurricane 🌀 season then they’ll have a tolerable summer!!!! Just like it is for tornado alley!!!!
