How The Assads Maintained Control Of Syria

Hafez al-Assad mixed his strategic intelligence with unprecedented brutality to ensure he did not suffer the same fate as his predecessors. To do this, he played off of Syria’s religious diversity. The Syrian political chambers were stacked with Sunni’s, to appease a potentially hostile majority, whilst his fellow Alawites were over-represented in important positions within the Armed Forces. The fact that the country was being run by an Alawite proved to be a contentious issue. Even though he tried to portray himself as a pious Muslim, Hafez alienated many with the secular nature of his 1973 constitution. Islamist groups represented the biggest challenge to his authority, initiating an uprising in 1976 that was to last 6 years. Hafez was finally able to quell the insurrection with the devastating 1982 Hama Massacre.

It was a Syrian ruler who many decades ago proclaimed that Syria will become another Switzerland.

The eldest son (Assad’s brother) wanted to marry the King Of Jordan’s sister. I believe they had a love affair but due to religion they weren’t allowed to marry.

The eldest son (I think his name was Bahar) ‘dyed in a car accident and his GFriend married the Dubai Prince/King. She has now runaway from him.

Maybe the King of Jordan’s father did it. They have some crazy stories.

Isn’t secular good? As Syria has Christians also and many different groups?

The rich people in this region are the most selfish in the world because they own as many women as they can, they spend lavishly on themselves and don’t give a toss about the poor.

"Unprecedented brutality" this is a phrase that can only be said by someone who does not know much about the Middle East and Syrian region, in particular.

Hafez al Assad’s son in the middle looks like an ex-footballer Georgian presidential candidate Mikheil Kavelashvili 🙂

The obvious concept of letting people choose their leders isn’t some «western» idea. It’s common sence. Same goes for separation of state and religious institutions. Basic human rights, it’s not rocket sience 🤷‍♂️

I don’t know if a brutal dictator violently suppressing their subjects counts as “unprecedented”
