West Coast Women of Abstract Expressionism at BERRY CAMPBELL

James Kalm tries to remain sensitive to the zeitgeist of the New York art scene. To that end, your correspondent keeps track of trends and tendencies that manifest themselves. Over the last four or five years one development that has attracted attention is the reevaluation of older women painters, and how they’ve been overlooked within the canon of contemporary art history.
“West Coast Women…” is an expansive presentation of 24 women painters, all hailing from the Greater Bay Area, and practicing a California version of Abstract Expressionism. Although varied, all this work merits a renewed consideration, and perhaps a more inclusive ranking of these artists unique achievements. Artists featured are: Ruth Armer, Katherine Barieau, Bernice Bing, Adelie Landis Bischoff, Pamela Boden, Dorr Bothwell, Joan Brown, Marie Johnson Calloway, Jay DeFeo, Claire Falkenstein, Lilly Fenichel, Sonia Gechtoff, Nancy Genn, Ynez Johnson, Zoe Longfield, Emiko Nakano, Irene Pattinson, Margaret Peterson, Sonya Rapoport, Deborah Remington, Frann Spencer Reynolds, Nell Sinton, Masako Takahashi, and Ruth Wall. This program was recorded June 1st and 7th, 2023. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Yes, a fabulous space to show the work of the Bay Area women artists.

Another thoughtful, slowly paced, and sensitively considered tour of a significant show in the Big Apple. Abstract Expressionism has such a carved-in-marble feeling 70-ish years later, so it's hard to slough off the familiarity of it and its "anxiety of influence" as you said (in another context). A few surprises, like Ynez Johnson at 5:00 . A bit of a bridge b/t Paul-Klee era surrealism, outsider art, and ab-ex. Deborah Remington was a big name at my school (Cooper Union), so nice to see her represented too. Thanks so much James! And o/c - Kate.

Great video and great show. Have always enjoyed the Bay Area work from the 50's, but these were all new to me. Also like that phrase "the anxiety of influence."

Dorr Bothwell painted up here in Mendocino (north of SF) and we involved in the early days of the Mendocino Art Center. Nice to see her work included in this show.

You are not at all mistaken. Elmer Bischoff was one of the finest of Bay Area painters of that era. He attended weekly live model sessions with Diebenkorn and others that went for years, even during the Ab Ex period. Perhaps his wife attended as well.

Appreciate your channel 🤙
My understanding is most of the 50’s 60’s abstract was inspired by Carl Jung’s Collective Unconscious Explosion into the fringe meets mainstream

Spinning around too fast. Stop and focus on each piece. Note artist’s name.

It cheapens the work to put the gender of the artist before the label of the "style" or genre of art. Shame

Great paintings irregardless of the nonsense we live in these days.

I don't understand art gender prejudice. Art is self evident, the gender of the person who created it should not count for or against the artwork. The art should be judged for itself.
