Interesting thing is that, at one point just after WW1, 1918-1919, when the GD Birla Company (then a major jute trader and parent of today’s Birla Group) was facing bankruptcy due to the post-war market crash (Birla made their first money as jute brokers which was in huge demand due to WW1), GD Birla was about to be sold to Andrew Yule Company, then one of Bengal’s largest conglomerates. Somehow, they didn’t go through with the sale.

Today, a hundred years later, Birla is where Birla is; and Yule is still there somewhere, gathering dust.
