For the pulley simple machine shows how to calculate the input force, input distance and the mechanical advantage.

A simple machine is a mechanical device that changes the direction and the magnitude of a force. In general, they can be defined as the simplest mechanisms that use mechanical advantage (also called leverage) to multiply force. Usually the term refers to the six classical simple machines that were defined by Renaissance scientists: the lever, the wheel and axel, the inclined, the screw, the wedge and the pulley. Simple machines do not make work easier, less input force may be needed but the force must be applied over a longer distance.

You nailed it! Thank you for providing a simple explanation for this simple machine. ;-)

Hate to break it to you it does make it easier! The work is the same but the strain is less therefore easier

what about a compound pulley? does it work for the compound pulley?

I appreciate that the explanation is easy. However, simply drawing a line through the ropes does not always give you mechanical advantage. Otherwise, a simple fixed pulley would give you an advantage of 2 and it does not. In both a fixed and movable pulley, there are two ropes, yet for one the mechanical advantage is 1 and for the other it is 2, respectively. I believe a clarification of which ropes to include and which not to include is in order here.

Does it matter where the pulley's are located?

Why is MA=ID/OD? what's the reasoning behind this equation?
