There is just something so fitting about this theme when it comes to the young dudes transformation... he starts off as a very empathetic and normal human being, then he's exposed to the horrors of war; by the end of it he's got that crazed look in his eye, full of raw putrid hatred for the enemy. It's like a disassociative drug... it takes you somewhere else; you're behind the gun, finding your next target, the only time you ever take a break is when you run out of ammunition. The enemy is no longer human; they are like lambs being led to the slaughter, into the cross-hairs of your gun. BAM! NEXT! BAM! NEXT!... then once the war is over you wake up in your bedroom not knowing how you got there or what the fuck you have done... the idea dawns on you that the shadowy characters you mowed down without a second thought might have been human as well, might have had families, might been as reluctant as you were at first to be there; but by then it's too late and all you have is memories and dreams because no one else will ever understand what you've become or accept it.
