He's not just reading the lyrics. The rhythm matches. And while he's not exactly trying to sing opera or metal, he's still making sure his voice sounds good. What I'm wondering is how the auto tune sounds seems to make it more expressive. The original sounds compact and almost closed while the auto tune sounds inside-out. Especially in the part where he says "Heat waves been faking me out" twice. That part seems to escalate force, kind of like the "hello, how low" from "Smell's Like Teen Spirit."

Just to clarify, he didn’t exactly use auto in the original for the chorus. He used layering where he recorded himself singing the same lyric but in different pitches to add that effect that may have sounded like auto tune to you. And no he doesn’t use auto tune.
