HELP IDENTIFY! Fish Trap Catches *RARE* Catfish in Tiny Creek!

Help identify this catfish we caught in a fish trap from a tiny creek!

Today, I go to a tiny creek filled with exotic and invasive fish including Molly’s, cichlids, catfish, and many other species to use a DIY bin fish trap to catch my new pet!

Fun fact some species of catfish do have venom gland in their spine fin😮

You should call the cat fish “Stabby” or “Kitten” lol. Maybe “Spike.” The catfish looks like a channel catfish to me. I’ve caught a ton of babies over the years. Even when they are no longer than a dime or nickel. They are easy to care for because they can gulp air to increase there oxygen when their ponds and creeks dry up. So when the water they are in is stale or stagnant they can still breath. Some species can survive out of water for hours at a time. I’ve always loved catching channel cat fry because you put them in your fish tank and kind of forget they are there. Until they get big enough to feel safe swimming in the open and start hunting down minnows. Loved the trap tried on my self a couple years ago. I’m aiming for baby blue catfish and bowfin fry- mud fish fry. I think it would be really awesome to raise a bowfin.

I do like fish trap videos but everyone who makes them show s the fish for a quick second. They should show more close ups or take some close up pictures of each fish before releasing and show a slide show the fish fish caught. Like they do in snake catching videos (herping videos). Just a suggestion!!

The first fish you took out of the plastic box traps was a baby tilapia btw and the one you got out after trying to get the catfish out is a baby bluegill

need a (big) hole on the bottom covered with mesh to let the water out to make it easier to pull the trap up.

That reminds me of the first time I got sting by a catfish, it hurt like hell, now after getting sting so many time my body got accustomed to the venom and I barely feel a thing, love the vid btw.

Last time i got stung by a catfish the barb went right through my finger and thrashed around, i had to cut the barb off the fish and use pliars to pull the barb the rest of the way through my finger. I have not messed with catfish since than.

Catfish are poisonous but if you rub your finger against it’s belly it will fill better. One of my friends got finned all the way to the bone. I get finned every time I go cat fishing

Folks in my area have a safe method to pick up catfish bare hand but I would not recommend it. It is only safe for the handler but at the same time it will hurt the fish. Anyway, you should get those fingers checked. Be safe Bobby.

Been stung by a catfish once. Was a caretaker at an aquarium supply company. One of those little buggers caught me while taking care of a tank. Definitely not pleasant.
At the time, I wasn't sure it had a sting. Turns out they did. At least I avoided stings from some of the more poisonous saltwater species.
