How Safe are DREO Electric Space Heaters?

Old space heaters last forever but are they safe? Dreo CLAIMS they have the safest heaters out there, with new technology, so I put them to the real test compared to my older heater.

Dreo provided me with their heaters for this video. They had no control over what I would say or show.

NEVER leave a heater unattended. NEVER.

I had an old model heater. My son had moved it next to his study table one night. By morning, the plastic side next to the table had melted down exposing the heating element. Luckily nothing had caught fire. So having adequate space around the heater is very important.

wild how that first heater caught fire. Every space heater ive messed with, including old ones without the tip switch, have 2 different safety features.

1. A bi-metalic switch that cuts all power if it gets too hot. This auto-resets after some time and allows the heater to still function again.

2. A thermal fuse (presumably rated slightly higher than the bimetalic switch) that blows if that switch fails and obviously does not self reset and is not easily replacable.

Watch your hair dryers too after use. I always hold the blue cool air button before turning it off to scrub off all the left over heat.

That was nice of Dreo to send you a space heater for demonstration purposes and heater safety.

The fire with the old heaters is why they have a secret BTU rating of It's overdrive mode. Works all the time, at least once.

Thanks for all the useful info. I'm still a fan of the oil filled radiators for space heaters since the heat is distributed over such a large surface area and they're quiet. Even so, I NEVER leave one heating unattended.

I have a 20 year old space heater and it has a tip over feature. It was surprising to find out you had one that was only 7 years old that didn’t. I just assumed they were mandatory.

Great Vid! I bought the 2ft tower Dreo, 2 yrs ago for my dinette which sits on a slab of cement, no insulation, gets very cold in the winter. I bought a Dreo because of the quietness, radiant heat, the tip-over protection, but mainly because of the safety plug which I'd never heard of before. My house still has old knob and tube wiring so that alone gave me more peace of mind. But I always unplug it when I leave the room. Thanks for the "extra" peace of mind I know have owning a Dreo.

I've been using a small Dreo heater this winter in Chicago. Works great! The only thing I wish it had was a feature to automatically turn on the timer function to a preset number of hours every time I turn it on.

I bought the most popular Dreo heater, the round one that you don’t show, a couple of years ago, and it has performed flawlessly. 4.6 well deserved stars from over 7, 800 reviews. Dreo makes quality, that’s for sure.

Two minutes to start burning. Wow that's fast.

Thanks for sharing! This is always a concern. It’s good to see safety features that actually work

A note on the radiator heaters - they're no more efficient than the tiny ones. All energy put into these things eventually becomes heat, including energy used to drive fans. That's not to say they're useless, some people like the quieter and more gradual/consistent heating of radiant vs fan forced air. If you like that get one but don't expect any savings.

Efficiency really only comes into play when your intended output is not heat (heat is normally 'waste') or you need a heat exchanger (like in a gas furnace or diesel heater, where you can't use all the heat produced because you have to exhaust hot combustion products.)

My local volunteer fire department hosts an open house every year. They build a fully finished 8 x 8 foot three sided 'room' in the parking with material donated by a local lumberyard. Then they furnish it with donated paint, wallpaper, carpet, curtains, a small sofa, and a table lamp. They stick a space heater in it and intentionally cause it to overheat. Within minutes, the sofa, curtains, and lampshades are all aflame, and the firefighters quickly knock down the fire. Watching it is both fascinating and scary!
Synthetic furnishings and window coverings burn quickly and put out lots of toxic black smoke, so it's important to have multiple functioning smoke detectors in the home or apartment because you literally have minutes to evacuate before the smoke kills you.

I installed the larger wall mounted Dreo you included in this video in May because we have a room that is always cold even in summer months and we had my mother in law visiting and staying in there. It worked flawlessly and install was straightforward. Only complained would be I wanted to use togglers not the included drywall mounts and to do so I had to modify the slots where the screws go in to accommodate the larger toggler bolts.

Another thing I see people doing is using cheap power strips that aren't fully rated to handle the full load of a heater, hotplate, crockpot, etc. Usually you can tell when the plastic around the slot starts to discolor and or warp. Some power strips and surge protectors can sustain the load but there's just some cheap ones out there that you look at it and go that doesn't even look like it a whole together and then there's others that look like it would and won't.

Oil fin are the only heaters i trust to leave on while sleeping,
Ceramic heaters are quite safe too.
Thermal fuses and tip detection is standard on all heaters sold in Australia

I bought a new looking, unused heater at a thrift store for $8. Tested in store: heat, fan OK. But I neglected to test for a tip-over switch, which I later found it did NOT have. It's nice to save money, but I'm NOT going to use this in my home. I'll use it outdoors as a load when testing generators. I believe all current heaters (any brand) are required to have both tip-over & overheat shut off.

Just bought one for my wife for her home office. Works great. She loves that it has a remote
