The decibel (dB) is a unit used to measure sound level. It is also widely used in electronics, signals and communication. Continued exposure to noise above 70 dBA (adjusted decibels) over time will cause hearing loss. The volume (dBA) and the length of exposure to the sound will tell you how harmful the noise is. In general, the louder the noise, the less time required before hearing loss will occur. But what will happen at decibel levels way higher than that? Will it cause instant rupture of ears or instant death?

The highest dB level I’ve ever experienced was at a wedding ceremony. We were in a shed and it started to hail A LOT. You couldn’t hear the music or anyone speak at all. It lasted for nearly 10 minutes and caused $12.7M CAD in damages. The dB level ranged from 127 to 134 dB. It hurt pretty bad, even for me (I listen to music frequently from 105 dB to 109 dB). A lot of noise can be really bad.

Depends on the frequency. 160db at 28 hz is not at loud as 120db at 400hz. My subwoofers in my truck meters at 150db at 34hz and it ain't to bad. But I have heard car audio systems play 150db at 70hz and I feel like I can't breath or a car audio system that plays 300-10, 000hz at 130db feel like your ears are going to bleed. The frequency plays more of a role than any thing.
