Every time we hear about the virtues of multiculturalism and diversity, I think about what Dr. Sowell just pointed out. Culture matters. Cultural norms, values, priorities, social expectations all play a role in whether people choose as a society to do what is necessary to maintain an industrialized economy. If you try to import people who stubbornly refuse to adopt these ideas or export these ideas to foreign places where other ideals are the cultural norm, their societies will not progress. You run into people who see it as their identity which is being questioned, and they'll fight it tooth and nail, even as they wallow in poverty.

Success is about hundreds and thousands of choices which set the conditions for success to occur. No, there's no magic formula, but we do know what works and should be seeking to emulate that.

"While these institutions could be copied by anyone, the history and traditions behind them could not be synthesized, and it was these intangibles that made the tangible institutions and structures work."

It's a good time to republish Thomas Sowell's comments on Iran.

I have always found it interesting that all the countries in the Anglosphere are on par if not better economic wise to the UK and contribute to culture or in the USAs case dominate it.
But it has not happened in Spanish or Portuguese speaking countries.

To build the ideology of democratic principles within the culture of a society, can often take many generations. Often democratic rights and privileges have been bought and paid for by the suffering and blood of many ancestors. In my home town for instance, there is a memorial plaque to a man who was burnt at the stake by Mary Queen of Scots because he did not convert back to Catholosism. Sadly, tyrants often have to satiate their viciousness with blood before freedom can come about.

if Thomas Sowell had been teaching history, economics and poli-sci at my high school & collage (albeit away back), I might have made the honour roll :) That said, in the past few years, I think I've learned more from his teachings here than in all those years classes, because of the way he extracts from our histories.. makes so much sense.

One reason why also is the area and beliefs of the people and how it would coincide with such a new change. Also having to overthrow what was already established wouldn’t be easy or peaceful

In Nigeria, the British handed power over to the less aspiring tribe in the nation. This was deliberate to ensure they had a tight grip on natural resources.

British governance is based on trust which is why it worked so well. However it only works where there is trust between government, business and citizens (social contract) which is something that can't be taken for granted.

awesome to see my home city Glasgow in the first clip, Kelvingrove museum with Kevin Hall in the background. Glasgow tenements along the street. Cool.

Those traditions mean a lot. I think (non-expert opinion here) that in much of the world, if you gain power you're expected to favor your group. We have our own accepted corruption in the U.S. -- diplomatic appointments for campaign donors and the like -- but it's a bit more narrowly focused.

Hong Kong had no democracy at all when it rose, it had economic freedom.

Thomas Sowell, the jewel of American historical academia is ignored in the education system while CRT is making millions for Merrick Garland's son-in-law . Pray Trump returns.

Most people around the world view themselves as part of a group first and foremost. They will submit group identity to their individual identity.

That's ultimately the problem. Rather than an even fair playing field for all, you have different tribes vying for power to be corrupt for their own group. everyone suffers as a result.

Christianity appears to be the main reason why this problem of worldly identity first is somewhat controlled in places like the UK and America.

the Commies are working overtime to destroy that however.

With due respect to Prof. Sowell. Democracy is the most misunderstood and thus “abused” term in todays world (sadly in 2022).

For many countries around the world democracy is a system of electing a parliament. They all think the parliament is supposed to legislate rules for the benefit of common man. Such parliaments when elected fail miserably resulting in autocracies and oligarchies. And we all say “British democracy” cannot be copied.

The real issue is that people are being told to copy a caricature of British democracy.

British democracy is really not just a simple system of electing parliament. Instead the main pillars of this system are:

1. Rise and dominance of industrialist class. Democracy evolved to give rights to newly minted industrialists class. This allowed the industrial elite to have a seat at the table where aristocrats and Monarchs used to sit before the industrial and commercial revolution in Western Europe. A modern democracy without industry is useless system where people live on borrowed time/money.

2. Financial system as evolved from Italian banking and Dutch stock market. This too supported industrialists.

2. Existence of reserve currency (pound Sterling as globally acceptable as US Dollars and Euro )

3. Strong Naval force (even stronger when combined with US Naval force) to enforce the British writ

4. British system of jurisprudence, that protects the industrialists. A byproduct of this systems benefits financial systems and private property. Thus common man is an indirect beneficiary.

All these factors resulted in the rise of Britain. However the same system that gives rise to the industry results in making common man a prosperous man. So he votes and resists the temptation of creating unrest.

If you take away the industrialists and the industry jobs, British democracy gets hollowed out, and thus ripe for the rise of autocrats and dictators.
