Judging by the comments, it looks like Niall hit a nerve.

I think the biggest underestimation is just how great the risk of political and economic centralization is in the US.

If a person is nervously worried and conjectured for a long time, then there may be mental problems; if a country talks about the “threat” of other countries in this way every day, then it is likely to encounter trouble in its own development.

Asia is writing their own rules. If the WEST wants to do business in Asia, they have to follow Asian rules. You want to trade in Asia? Go study RCEP first. Gone are the days where rules are dictated by the WEST. Be it, the US, EU or the UK, all are a shadow of their former self. Plenty of puffery from Niall Ferguson but I suppose such hubris is good. It breeds complacency. While the west continues to talk down to the east, they may slowly realize that there's no audience. We are forging ahead on our own the ASIAN way.

Ask US to compete and not use underhand tactics against China.

the biggest problem for the US is the reserve currency situation. we dont really know what would happen w/- it. we dont know if it can be lost or will be lost soon. We know the trade deficit is a big threat and its been going on for a long time. We dont know the size of the expected assault on shale and arms export from biden. its not impossible to see a 30% drop in US Dollar value. 40% is called a currency crisis.

Ferguson is always on the money, excellent historian and thinker. Great documentaries, albeit he does a have a slight bias to the West his home turf.

Definitely, Anglo-Saxon's empire on which the sun never sets is still alive, just like 200 years ago. Niall is living there and the history in his eyes already ended.

Geopolitics is 80% complicated.
Common Goals like Climate Change, Electric car, Making money, Super heroes, Music, Sports, Soccer, Olympics, are things that UNITE the world. Good vs Evils.

Can't believe he is a senior fellow of a renowned institution. I think he just got out of a coma and doesn't know a thing that is happening to the world. Another Gordon Chang type of thinking.

Too bad that Ferguson expressed a bias view about China that she has lost a favorable position in the world, he has to listen to the economists and investors from Europe and USA. USA and Europe are looking more towards Asia and particularly to China for business cooperation. ASEAN + 5 conference will be held soon in Vietnam and the 15 nations are going to sign the RECEP agreement on free trade in Asia. So, what unfavorable position is Ferguson is talking about?
