I love hearing first time readers talk about Bran chapters as boring. They are the most interesting by far. You get all the back story if you read in between the lines.

You were so lucky to be able to read this book before the TV show came out! I was spoiled through all the books, except a bit from A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons.

Do you think George RR Martin was right to be annoyed Goblet of Fire won the 2001 Hugo Award over A Storm of Swords?

Jaime is the MVP in Storm of Swords for me. I'd say the Epilogue is my fav but... it's not a main POV. So gonna go with Jaime. Tyrion is my fav in GoT and CoK, Jaime in SoS, Cersei in FfC, and Jon in DwD. So for the most part I love the internal conflicts of the Lannisters.

I just imagine that George just sits there writing the books with a wheel next to him that has the names of every character on it and every 10 minutes he spins the wheel to decide who he's gonna kill next.

I like your reviews and I won't spoil anything, but Feast for Crows is difficult for some people because it doesn't feature three fan favorite characters and introduces new ones. Dance with Dragons is really just part 2 of the same book because they run (mostly) simultaneously, and introduces yet more characters.

The books highly reward re-reading though, there is so much well written foreshadowing. On my first re-read of the entire series I enjoyed the last two books MUCH more.

I don't get the hate Bran chapters tend to get. I mean, there were only 4 of them in ASoS, and they were all really good, with the first one being a slight exception. In the second chapter Meera tells important back story regarding Lyanna Stark, Rhaegar Targaryen et al. The second one is the one in the tower where he sees that other character you mentioned, and the last one is an awesome horror-novella style play on LotR moria chapters.

Just finished this book yesterday, it was a terrific read all the way through; didn't mind the Bran chapters because I think Martin is setting him up for an awesome story line down the road.  Can't wait for all these characters and plot threads to come together in the end and we finally see who will rule Westeros.

The Bran chapters were one of my favorites mostly for all the backstory and the lore of Westeros. On the other hand, the ones i get bored the most were the Arya ones (mostly because she was only walking around until Beric Dondarrion appeared, then it really kicked ass). Besides that i agree with your review!

Wow, in contrast, I LOVED Bran's chapters. I'm really interested in his storyline.

I guess Cat and her brother Edmure Tully get more hate than Tywin because they were supposed to be Robb's supporters but they ended up dooming his cause in their own way. Cat's foolish release of Jaime made Robb look a fool and led to Karstark's rebellion. Edmure's disobedience to Robb cost them the best chance they had to trap Tywin's army. Cat and Edmure both acted foolishly for selfish needs. Cat trusted a Lannister to save her girls and Edmure craved personal glory. Tywin was just his enemy.

I liked Bran's chapters.. with those stories they mentioned in it provide so much history... great background and all

If you are talking about Robb, the downfall of Robb started when he send Theon away, not Catelyn.I just feel much hatred is directed to Catelyn while other characters like Tywin(a murderer) gets so much love.

Why there is so much hate on Bran's chapters ? Their are great
He's little boy, lost his dream and his family.. And have nothing
Even the major characters were awesome ( Jojen - Meera - Hodor )
The solemnly way of Jojen, and the vision he saw
The courage of Meera and the way she fights..
Just waiting for TWOW to read Bran's chapters again

I do like Catelyn Stark.Yes she does whine alot but if you see from her shoes you could understand it, she just lost her husband, lost two daughters to the Lannisters, lost two son due to Theon's stupid decision and her only remaining son is in war even though he is clearly young. For a women of Westeros where her family is everything, thats alot to handle

I agree. I'm not a fan of Bran's chapters. I'm about to start this book, just having finished Clash of Kings today. Great review!

As other commenters have pointed out, I absolutely LOVE Bran chapters. You learn so much from them! I'm currently on my first re-read of the books, and the Bran chapters are even more amazing than the first time I read them.

Feast for Crows has a slow start, and there's a few POVs that aren't always easy to go through (Cersei's for me) but overall there's a lot in it that's worth the read. Some of the most intense scenes in the series are in that book in my opinion.
