This is good advice, but I also worry with a short clip like this people will take it out of context. Adjust your concept of “can’t marry them.” Remember that in previous lectures, Mufti Menk said that it is sinful for parents to stop two people from marrying each other because of race or ethnicity or nationality or social / economic status or class. If they’re both believers who are focused on their deen, and they love each other and are willing to work hard together to make a good life and earn their place in Jannah together, do NOT get in between them, because that is sinful. What Mufti Menk is talking about in this clip, is coveting or manipulating someone whose heart is already spoken for, or, trying to force someone to marry you who doesn’t share your feelings, or put them in a situation where they “have to” marry you like forcing them to be pregnant, or sleeping with another man and lying to the man you want to marry to say it’s his baby. Don’t force people to marry you. (And don’t force your children to marry someone either). Let people choose their partners on the basis of shared focus on their deen together, and genuine love. You have to remember that this dunya is temporary, and trying to force “practical” marriages or marriage because you covet, takes away from your blessings in paradise. If someone is going to marry another who has less than them, let them do this act of kindness to elevate their station, because this is sound practice in the Quran that a man marries a woman from “lower birth” to bring her more comfort (or vice versa), as marrying widows was customary among the company of Muhammad (SAW) as an act of grace and kindness, and love.

Do not tell people they “can’t” marry because of prejudice. Mufti Menk is talking here in this clip about not being coercive or destructive in your pursuit of marriage, not your prejudiced reasons for thinking people who love each other “can’t” marry. Don’t twist his words to control or manipulate your children or friends or exes!
