Thanks James. I can see how static site generators would be great for websites that don't need too much updating, I'll definitely experiment with these as most of the sites I've done (I'm still a rookie) were for dentists, physio's, an interior designer, and special events, ones that don't require too many changes once they're up. So far its been me doing all the updates/maintenance for these.

Have you ever considered doing a video about lightweight CMS's? Is there one you'd recommend? OctoberCMS, BoltCMS, PerchCMS etc? I'm sure they are many others I haven't heard of yet.

This is what I'm looking into these days, what happens when a site is turned over to a client and how do they update and maintain it once its theirs WITHOUT calling me daily or weekly for minor changes!
I'm looking for a simple backend that can be customized so that clients can do the things that are safe for them to do.


I need to know more about twig etc and if there's an option that lets me design a site with HTML, CSS (SASS), javascript, maybe PHP & mySQL and THEN make some of the content editable in a backend for the owner/client to update themselves (images, text, maybe add a section about an upcoming event they have etc). Is there such a thing or is it only Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal and so on?

My understanding of a static website from back in my day was the site didn't go anywhere. It had no links and was "static". I have been hearing "static" sites being used nowadays and I was a bit confused since the sites weren't actually "static".
