Thank you for a good discussion. You are wrong though in compareing crimea and the rest of Ukraine: In Crimea 90% of the population would welcome the Russians, hence both invasion and occupation was extremely easy. But Putin knew that the rest of Ukraine would put up a fight. Donbas was the goal all along - the only reason he bothered with Kyiv was to gain leverage at the negotiation table: "I'll leave Kiyv alone if you give me Donbas" - and I think Putin expected such negotiations and a settlement to happen within just a few days. In other words: He never intented to take all of Ukraine - but he certainly wanted the Ukrainians to think so. (Putin is not stupid)
