One of our ferrets was badly abused by his previous owners. These are extremely intelligent and good natured little creatures. He had been starved by them, i could see his little ribs and it was obvious that he had been eating paper, carpet and we think bugs as well to fill his tummy. He was so scared of most sounds he would hide and shake.
We leave hard food out all day and in the evening either a "soupie" mix that's like a more wet type of soft food or raw pieces of chicken. He was terrified of eating with us nearby and so we watched from across the room so we could be sure he was getting all the food he wanted and needed....
...I'll never forget how about 4 days i was walking down the hallway with his soupies and i think that was the moment he realized he would never go hungry again and that he was safe... Because out of nowhere he did the most incredibly adorable thing. He ran ahead of me down the hallway but backwards and doing a little dance. That was when he stopped being afraid of eating in front of us too.
We litter trained our ferrets so we didn't have to put them in a cage (i really hate caging) after he ate he crawled up in to our bed, gave me kisses and burrowd under the blanket to sleep. He sleeps with me every night now.
