Is Disney World Worth It? - Disney's Cost Per Hour

Many people ask if Disney World is worth it. While that's such a hard question to answer in a video, let's take a look at what Disney World can cost somebody, not just in total, but per hour!

▶New video every MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, and FRIDAY!

Now just to reiterate, there are SO MANY variables that go into a Disney World vacation, that it'd be hard to come up with a blanket claim that Disney World is or isn't worth going to. Not to mention it ultimately boils down to your own personal vacation preference.

But for fun, I wanted to see not only how much a Disney vacation would cost, but how that cost would break down on an hourly basis.

For this video I created three tiers of vacations: value, moderate, and deluxe. They're all 7 day vacations (2 travel days, 5 full days) with food, airfare, and park tickets accounted for.

For the hourly breakdown I averaged about 7 hours of sleep per night which would NOT count to the hourly cost.

Great video! For anyone saying it's still too much, there are certainly a lot of places to cut corners and save money. My middle-class family of 4 went every other year to WDW when I was a kid. We drove, so that cuts on airfare. We never stayed at a resort (we'd stay at outside hotels, and since we drove, we could drive ourselves to the parks), so that cuts on lodging. We would eat the complimentary breakfast at our hotel, bring snacks to the parks, and usually eat dinner near our hotel. And my mom would do research to find deals on tickets, not to mention that we never added the park hopper because we knew we'd be doing one park per day. But despite all that price-cutting, we never felt like we were missing out on anything :) I know it's still more complicated than this, and that even after doing all this and more, it still might be too much for many people, but it's just my two cents from experience.

Keep in mind this is not set in stone. For example if you drive subtract the air fares. Staying in a one or two bedroom villa? Add cost to your room but take away some meals because you have a full kitchen. There are also different deals and rates at different times

Definitely not worth it considering the amount of time spent waiting in line to ride just one ride

If you're a Disney fan it's worth it. If you're not, then no. Simple.

Ever been stuck in 2 hour ques at Disney? - would not want to think about that hourly rate I happen to really like theme parks but the prices at Disney is becoming a little tough to bear in my opinion.

Considering passport price alone, TDR is a much better value than DL or WDW. A one day pass to TDL or TDS is only about $68. Tokyo even has a Starlight passport for admissions after 3pm on weekends and holidays for about $50, and an After 6pm passport for less than $40.

Rob - thanks for your vids. I'd say Disney is really for kids and kids at heart who can relate to the characters, fairy tales and movie themes. The focus is not only on rides... I'd say the rides is probably 1/3 or less of the attraction factor. It's more the sights, theming and characters that account for most of the attraction. Being an engineer, I am always impressed by the amount of "Imagineering" that goes into the place. Six flags and the like are more rides and thrills. To each his own though... I'm supposed to be headed back for my 7th visit in a month! Yay!

Now if you camp at fort wilderness you get all on property benefits, its roughly $60 a night, and you can cook food at campsite to bring costs down. All you gotta do is drive down which could save money on flights as well as everyove is pitching in on gas.

Nope. Not unless you wanna spend 75% of your day waiting in endless lines.

Interesting topic!
I used to go to lots of live concerts when I was a younger duck, but I felt like I got priced out of them over the years and that Disney was actually offering more bang for my buck. That determination was made something like 5 years ago when a local appearance by BB King had tickets that were no less expensive than $250. An Elvis Costello show that followed soon after had its cheapest tickets priced at something like $189. I quickly decided that the records I already owned at home were much more cost effective.

Since that was a few years ago I decided to take a look at upcoming concerts in my area. What I found was the Beach Boys in January at $114 per ticket and Red Hot Chili Peppers in April at $99 per ticket. These were the best comparisons to the above mentioned artists I could find, so you can see that the prices have gone down a bit, while Disney's have gone up. But if you consider it based on your "per hour" model the concerts still cost between $33 and $38 an hour (I'm guessing you might get a 3 hour show from these guys), which puts both into the "Deluxe" Disney territory. Of course that doesn't even account for parking, dinner out, or those overpriced concert T-shirts that used to be a requirement for me.
