Erland Van Lidth De Jeude was an accomplished operatic singer, but his actual voice wasn't used for the song, "Down in the Valley", in the film. Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike in 1980, he wasn't able to record the song himself, so they used the pre-recorded track to which he had sung the song during the filming in the final print of the movie. Dorian Holley's voice was used to replace Erland's, using the same video track. Therefore, if you don't think the vocal exactly fits Erland's mouth, it was Holley trying to "lip sync," not Erland.

I saw this movie at the drive-in when I was a kid, I was 6 or 7. I remember being captivated by this scene. The song and his voice just filled the inside of the car. When the movie was released on video I took my birthday money and bought it just so I could hear this song again. Still gives me goosebumps 42 yrs later.

This was the best scene because earlier in the movie you learn that grossberger killed his entire family but as you get to know his character you start to think mabey his family were the evil ones, it was only unfortunate for the strangers on the street that looked like his family because they met the same fate.
