We live in a time where post-secondary education is segmented into focused areas. But overall, education can just be a development of your way of thinking.

Seshu Iyengar is a third-year student in the University of New Brunswick’s concurrent Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree programme studying Philosophy and Biology-Physics. Seshu has a belief of why he chose such an non-typical combination of topics to study. And therefore, is interested in the area of cross-disciplinary education, where he explores the area of learning through multifaceted ways of learning in post-secondary education.

When you are young ... or when I was young ... I realized that I did not know much of anything. There are experts who tell us that no 17 or 18 year old kid has the insight to choose a major or get a decent college education. I have had some pressure in recent years to return to college and largely this is because my first University degree has not been worth anything to me. Honestly, one day my Senior Year in College my worst Professor cornered me and reminded me that I needed money. I knew I needed to earn money which is why I took a job with the University and why I got the degree. My education interfered with my learning about life and learning about life might help me know what I want to do in life. I know I want the money and know I need the money but I honestly don't know what I want to do. If I don't get any traction on the work and income side of my education then how do I know if I've learned anything at all? Don't get me wrong. I know uneducated people and they believe they are smarter than everyone else. They believe they could run Chase Bank better than JP Morgan Chase is run. So I deeply respect the value of education... and experience. But I wonder sometimes with all the politics if teachers are really devoted to learning. I admit that in school I sometimes heard of a party going on somewhere in town or on campus and I visited the party just to see what my classmates did. But some of these teachers are so politically radical that they are a worse influence than what you see going in at a party or other gathering of kids. Not that what kids do is harmless. I happen to believe that drinking is something a smart kid should avoid and you should always concentrate on money and income. As to enlightenment, I hope I make the lives of people around me better. I would enjoy that. But I also want to benefit myself from my hard-earned skills. And some educators don't want this for their students.
