Far too often I come across students who have difficulty discerning taxonomy. We need to teach them more about superordinal, coordinal, and subordinal concepts.

'Whale' isn't a taxonomic name, it's a common one, generally meaning a large Cetacean.
There is no 'taxonomic' definition of vegetable (or *fruit* for that matter -- this is not a current taxonomic term, it's a botanical one). Vegetable in scientific jargon means 'anything pertaining to plants'.

Dolphins aren't whales. Both groups are part of Cetacea but saying that makes dolphins whales would be like saying that it also makes whales dolphins. Whales and dolphins (and porpoises) are separate groups that all combine to make Cetacea. Are mongooses leopards because they are both part of Feliformia?
