How To Choose a game for Twitch Growth

Personally, I think too many people rely on looking at the top games by viewers on Twitch to pick what they play, because I think there is a much better number.

Category Followers. These are the people who have hit follow on a category or game, and if someone has done that they are pretty much going to get recommended on their homepage that category. They’ll also get recommended other categories they like watching, but you can’t see that number.

An example, Stardew Valley a game I got a lot of growth in when I started, took me from 10 avg to 20 avg, has 798,000 followers, an incredibly active community who love it religiously, it still gets updates, has npc’s that are chatty so it's good for smaller streamers with less twitch chat to respond to, but it only averages at 500 - 800 total viewers and you only need 5 viewers to appear in the top 3 rows.

The style of this video is similar to Alpha Gaming and Gaming Careers in parts. A large influence on this series has come from content creators like Wild4games and Nutty.

I have my layout being 20 to 30 minutes of just chatting while sending out notifications on various socials. As for the 2 games I have been mainly alternating between us Stardew valley and My Time at Portia. Both games have small development teams, they both involve crafting and retro aesthetics. So I get the Minecraft fans and retro gamers coming over. I show off mods in Stardew so old players can see something new. At the end of my stream I read off my recent twitch followers.

I noticed a trend as I was experimenting with content last year, which has allowed me to find my niche - cozy crafting with a sprinkle of chaos and loads of giggles 🤭 but I still once a week play either animal crossing or the sims.

Some one called me "their cozy reassuring guide to roguelike games" and I think this is a beautiful reflection of who I am as a creator. While I stream more than just roguelikes, I know that's what my community tends to prefer... but also that many of them will come along with me no matter what. I think my biggest "issue" is that I love experimenting... like I'm going to start a bookclub on stream. While not necessarily in my niche, its about networking, connections, community. It could be a bust, but for me content creation is about finding joy in the things I do. It might make me grow slower or maybe not grow much at all... but as long as I'm finding joy, that's what's important.

I think your tips are fantastic by the way. But I also think it's important for people to consider why they create content. Is it just for higher viewership/making money or is it for some other reason?

Retro is actually a good example for how variety works. If you've built up a retro base you can pretty much stream any game within that genre and people will still show up.

I was a chronic game quitter for a long time - it’s been really rewarding to stick with things until I finish and that allows me to keep building a core audience that is ready to move to a new game when I am!

The mindmap/niche I've focussed on isn't necessarily on Twitch anymore but for YouTube content. And it's sort of a mix of what Alpharad and Pointcrow are doing but with a heavier focus on Pokémon as the core. I'd also say that your personal YouTube channel has been a beacon of inspiration for me and it's great to see your efforts be rewarded!

I've gone live with me just sitting and knitting for 3 hours straight and it was one of my favourite streams XD
I've also been working on focussing on one game at a time and I've found my engagement is going up every stream. Hopefully I can keep this going and improve more.

I think my niche is story-focused rpgs like Witcher 3 or even Breath of the Wild because I feel like my strength as a streamer (and this may sound weird as hell) is howe into the games I get. I've even cried on stream multiple times, but people who love the games I love really bonded with me over how emotional and open I am. Soooo I guess I gotta find more games that make me really emotional and that have great storylines

I noticed i was streaming too much games instead to focus on something i enjoyed and wanted to focus on.

Right now i focus on art because i upload animations on youtube so. 😌😌

Sucks worse than my vacuum cleaner when I was a curious teenager. As someone who has had a bad, pissed at my own twitch experience/YouTube growth. You cheered me up good.

Thank you and the team for all you do. .

I totally agree with this ~I stream Arknights, Azur Lane and Blue Archive and they all have the same players ~ so it’s really cool to have the same people enjoy different streams from me. Half of them like FPS games so they tube into my Apex and Overwatch streams as well. Then every so often I will do polls on my discord and my viewers will pick what I stream. Its my 5:11

I'm not personally not trying to make streaming a career, but when I do start I'm wanting to play horror games, tactical shooters, VR games, and the occasional Sim game like DCS. I've got a bunch of games but not everyone ties together.

I'm happy that I chose Skyrim as my game. It gives me a chance to expand so far beyond the game and focus on Elder Scrolls as a whole.

If you find yourself trying a new game that fits the map and you see a dip in viewership don’t be discouraged or take it out on yourself. Too many of us take that to heart. Sorry my two cents. Rad video!

For me I have been playing Splatoon on Twitch and this gives so much clarity Eljay! And your example with other Nintendo games could not had been better! I have been thinking about playing games like Legends of Zelda and Pokemon for a while now but have not really wanted to break a routine. Thanks so much for the feedback it means so much!
