BMW N5X Vanos Solenoid - Product Review, Symptoms & Diagnosis

►This solenoid is a common source of check engine lights and limp mode. The two most common codes you will see when this solenoid is operating erratically is 2A87 and 2A82. Usually, restarting your BMW can make the code or problem go away temporarily but it is likely for the problems to come back again. Awesome show ! I just changed mine for preventative maintenance. My 2010 535i feels like new again !! 113k. I didn't have any codes or anything. It was already idling smoothly but now it's even smoother. Power is there instantly !!

Thanks this was helpful and one of the best explanations yet. BMW 118i (2009) E87 120k on clock probably never been replaced. I have ordered two new ones (Genuine BMW) after repeated 002A98 error codes from the OBD. Will report back once they are fitted, I have already changed sparks and coil packs hopefully this will be the last thing required to get the car running smoothly again! I will report back once they are fitted in the hope this video and comment (hopefully with confirmation) help in some else research.

What’s the torque spec when installing the solenoids?

I was just looking at one of the aftermarket solenoids I bought. I specifically chose one that looked the most like oem. What I noticed was the oem have a very fine mesh and this style looks like it has wide open holes. Maybe the design makes a difference.

Thanks for the informative video! What are your thoughts on using Gates brand solenoids rather than OEM? I refuse to use Chinese ones but also don't want to spend a premium on BMW OEM. Gates seems like a good middle ground. Thoughts?

Do you have to replace both of them or just one of them, if just one which one, their is on on top and on on the bottom?

Can it also cause a eccentric shaft sensor code and or a throttle code?

What about the p0012 and p0015 can the Vanos cause that also.? Both and showing bank 1 overretarded. And is like I erase code and one or the other one is showing.

Does the the vanos makes noise when shaking the actual solenoid?? And I'm getting a 11.7 meter reading

I have code p0015 and p0012 got new cam sensor for both sides and lights problems still on rough idle and smells like it running rich ?? Any help thanks fcp

I got a code 2A87 and my car was put into limp mode, cleared it and started to drive home, about half way home the code came back and I noticed to white colored smoke coming from the exhaust. Could the smoke be from the exhaust solenoid failing?

You literally didn't describe one symptom of the Vanos Solenoid failing open or closed.
