Austrian Airlines 777 Business Class Trip Report

One of my final trips of 2023 was on @AustrianAirlines flying from London to Chicago via Vienna, allowing me to experience both their newest aircraft, the A320neo and one of their oldest, the Boeing 777. Austrian isn't known for a state-of-the-art hard product, but the airline's soft product, service and food and drink is what it is better known for. But how does the airline stack up against the competitors or even its sister airlines within Lufthansa.

There are plenty of things that should be upgraded, such as the seats and lounges in Vienna, but there are some little elements that really shine. After paying circa £1,900 on a return ticket, there's certainly value for money to be had by picking Austrian and worth considering, but did it live up to expectations?

I flew Premium Economy Austrian out LHR to BKK via Vienna and Swiss back via Zurich.

Swiss allegedly had new PE chairs. Food and service were ok, chairs were not food!.

Austrian was brilliant with older seats but the friendliest staff, lovely food and overall great quality. And Wiener Melange made with fresh coffee!
And an all day stop in Vienna to see the Prater.

I flew Austrian business class back in September/October, Chicago to Vienna (and back).

I had an amazing experience. There was all the great food, friendly service, and professionalism that is documented so well in this video.

I use a wheelchair and enjoy solo travel, and was very pleased with how the crew was very inclusive, ready and willing to assist with the on-board wheelchair to get me to/from the lavatory, and how the flight and ground crew kept me informed of the status of and treated my checked-in wheelchair with care.
Amazing experience! Yes the decor might be a little dated, but hardly noticeable when immersed in the great service…and all that wonderful bread!

Title was a bit misleading, but I was pleased to see you left with a very positive impression. I love Austrian's biz class product. Yeah, seat is a but old, but their service and catering can't be beat!

The triangle shape dishware was inherited from the original Lauda Air which was purchased by Austrian Airlines in the 2000s. Likewise the 777-200s & 767-300s are all former Lauda aircraft.

As you show, Austrians love their food, and the old school trolley service is charming. Way better than most rivals.

I flew Austrian many times and yes, their soft product during a flight, food and service, always shine. Even on a short houl flight, small warm sandwich is like eating some expensive michelline star food.

A great review - I ve flown them several times in business from Asia to Europe and they’ve always been consistently good - albeit for the somewhat outdated hard product - Food and service have always been plentiful and delicious ( I love a trolley service) and I always get off as full as full can possibly be

The new business class cabin on 787-9 is coming out soon (or it may be already flying). I booked a flight to Vienna this coming summer. The seat map I got when I made the reservation was that of the old business class cabin, but it got changed to that of the new 1-2-1 cabin yesterday. A pleasant surprise. I did not mind experiencing the old cabin, but the new cabin seems to provide more privacy and looks sleeker. This will be my first time to try the airlines and I am excited.

I completely agree with you.
At the moment, austrian is certainly the best European airline on long-haul routes.
I can't wait to see how they will surprise us with the new 787.
Hopefully a cool, typical austrian interior design.

For me, Austrian is by far the best airline in the Lufthansa Group!
I wish they would offer a lot more long-haul flights via Vienna.

If I have the choice ….. i would always take Austrian even if it means, i have to take a connecting flight, but it's worth it to me.❤🎉

I don't understand why the Lufthansa Group doesn't let its Austrian subsidiary fly many more long-haul routes. That would increase the turnover of the whole group and they would have a better reputation...

Wow all that food looked amazing! For a daytime flight that would make the trip for me…I’m not so worried about the hard product in this case. Other direction where sleep is important I would feel differently.

Utterly excellent review. We are looking for a more cost effective business route to the maldives and Austrian seem to offer something promising at half the price of british airways and virgin.

Will fly OS tonight (ARN-VIE-BKK) and wanted to checkout the SEN lounge in Vienna, and yea now I don't want to go there, I only have an 1h25m connection (G-Gates) and don't think I will have time for any other lounges..

I flew Vienna to Tokyo recently. Seat is comfortable, service was great, but there is no wifi, not even for a fee, so no chance to do any work. The planes are over 20 years old....
