Lyme disease, caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, is a complex and often misunderstood illness. This bacterium can reside in multiple insects and animals, including ticks, deer, dogs, cats, and various rodents and birds, giving it a remarkable ability to change forms, a phenomenon known as pleomorphism. These different forms—cell wall, cystic, intracellular, and biofilm—make it particularly difficult to eradicate. Additionally, ticks frequently carry multiple infections simultaneously, including Babesia, Bartonella, Ehrlichia, Anaplasma, and others, leading to a complex chronic medical condition known as multiple systemic infectious disease syndrome.

Patients with Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections often suffer from a wide range of symptoms such as chronic fatigue, insomnia, cognitive impairment, migratory joint and nerve pain, and neurological and psychiatric manifestations. Symptoms can fluctuate in severity and are often exacerbated by the life cycles of the infectious organisms and hormonal changes in women. Many patients turn to acupuncturists after being failed by conventional medicine, as most doctors have limited knowledge of chronic Lyme disease. The migratory nature of joint pain and the presence of other systemic symptoms make it imperative for acupuncturists to be skilled in diagnosing and treating these infections.

In this course, we will delve into the signs, symptoms, and pathophysiology of Lyme disease and other tick-borne infections. You will learn to implement screening techniques to identify patients who may need testing and evaluate the various Lyme disease testing options and their limitations. We will cover the identification and impact of co-infections on patient health, developing comprehensive treatment plans from a Chinese medical perspective. These plans will include acupuncture, cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, dietary therapies, and herbal support. Additionally, we will address the ethical issues often faced by chronic Lyme patients, including medical gaslighting, and emphasize the importance of collaboration with Lyme-literate physicians. This course will empower you to provide effective, holistic care to patients suffering from Lyme disease and tick-borne illnesses.

Upon completion of this course, practitioners will:

Define signs, symptoms and pathophysiology associated with Lyme disease and other tick-borne
infections.
Implement a screening strategy for patients who are suspected to have Lyme disease and other tick-borne
infections.
Evaluate testing options for Lyme and other-tick-borne infections.
Formulate an acupuncture and herbal treatment plans for Lyme and other tick-borne infections.
Identify and discuss the medical ethical issues associated with patients suffering from Lyme disease.
