Engines are undeniably the heart of any vehicle, and their reliability is key to a smooth and hassle-free ownership experience. While a dependable engine can provide years of worry-free driving, choosing the wrong one can quickly turn your car into a costly headache. Despite advances in modern engineering, not every engine lives up to expectations. Even some of the most respected car brands have produced engines that are notorious for breaking down before the odometer hits 50,000 miles—leaving owners with expensive repair bills and endless frustration.
Here, we’ve compiled a list of the most unreliable engines that have given owners more headaches than horsepower.

I know every video puts down the kias and the Hyundai's but this is my second Kia soul. First one I bought used in 2016. It was a 65, 000 mile 2013 model when I got it. That engine lasted to 288, 000 mi. I replaced it with a used one and then drove it to 323, 000 mi. When I traded it off for the 2021 that I now own. It has the 2.0 NU engine. This car now has 197, 000 mi on it in just over 3 years. All I do to it is change the oil every 7, 000 mi because I'm using fully synthetic and some people say that's still too long but it gets rather pricey to do it more often. I don't know why so many people have issues. Maybe it's because mine is driven everyday. It's driven hard everyday. 200 miles or more some days. So either I'm extremely lucky or I just maintain mine better by just changing the oil then other people do.

Maintenance is key. Don’t follow vehicle manufacturer recommendations. Go earlier. 5k mile oil changes. Cvt oil, coolant. Early and often. Short trips require more frequent oil changes. Cvt fluid replacement every 45k miles.

We have a Hyundai Santa Fe and it’s perfect. 2016 and has gone coast to coast several times. Gotta pay attention to the oils and fluids.

It's alledged that Toyotas today are not as reliable as they were because they aren't built in Japan anymore.

I work for 20 years as a Ford mechanic in Europe. Problems with drive belts only occor when using the wrong oil!! But i agree, it, s not the best system. From 2019 in Europe the 1.0l ecoboost engine has a timing chain.

Add Honda's 1.5L Turbo to that list. I just bought a Honda CR-V with it and it's been in the shop for nearly a month due to engine problems. It keeps lurching and dying in the middle of the road. I since learned that lots of owners had the same problem with this engine. Many are even saying it's the most unreliable engine ever produced by Honda.

6:44 ...A FULL TANK OF OIL???? Btw: I own a 2O12 Sorento, with 103, 249 miles on it, flawless ride!!! The 2.4L engine gets an oil change every 5, 000 miles, faithfully!!!

One piece of advice. Never buy a mid size SUV with a four cylinder engine. Too much weight for that little motor. Stick with a V6.

I had A 2014 Ki 13:26 a Sorento with the 2.4 GDI Kia recalled the engine and had to replace the engine. The I started listening to Scotty Kilmer on You Tube and found out what junk Kia's and Hyundai's are I would never buy another one.

One of the overall "stupid" things engine manufactures have been doing since the "Good 'ol Days" is trying to pull too much power from undersized (small cubic inch) engines. This puts unacceptably high strain on most every part on that engine. And while also making extreme and irrational changes in engine design to meet crazy environmental critera, they gotta pay the price...(or WE gotta pay the price that is)

I purchased a 2017 Diesel Land Rover Discovery Sport with an Ingenium engine which I now know is renowned for timing chain failure. I learnt that this inherent defect was common in 2016 - 2018 models in the last 3 months following the Timing chain failure. Due to its age ie >6 yrs Land Rover refused to pay for the repair even though they were very well aware of the inherent defect changing the timing chain in 2019. The cause of this defect has been blamed on the 2 year service plan which dilutes the oil creating the timing chain failure. I am pursuing the reimbursement of the cost of repair on the grounds of duty of care!
