The 'Backdoor' progression is one of the most important, soulful

Great video, wow, amazing (commenting for the algorithm)

But seriously great work. Been a music hobbyist all my life but now starting to study some jazz vocabulary, and this video hit just the right spot.

I've heard the term backdoor in the context of Jazz music before, but I never really understood it til this video!!

Weirdly enough, I asked an AI powered by ChatGPT to explain why playing a major chord a whole note below the tonic sounds so pleasant.

The AI didn't exactly answer me, but it said this was related to a technique called a "backdoor." I wasn't wholly convinced (because AI can be very hit or miss with music related questions), so I looked it up, and found this video. I am... a little stunned. I'm already seeing how it can lead to really cool sounds where the voice leading make sense, like CMaj7 -> FMaj7/C -> BbMaj7-> CMaj7/B

Thank you so much for such a concise description and examples! While it isn't quite intuitive for me yet, it is really cool seeing applications of these really consonant sounds!!

I'm messin' around with Larry Carlton's Room 335 and there is a cool one.. Fm7 > Gm7 > C9 > C#9 > Dmaj7

Lovely stuff! I’ve been looking at it recently as the subV of vi resolving to I. Cheers, Daniel

Yeah, I use b5 substitute scales over that a lot. Love the V7b9 sound very much.

I've heard the "Back Door" Progression often in R&B.

It’s like a deceptive resolution to vi excepts it’s a maj7 chord instead. Very cool

I like it when (at 1:25) B is marked as the 7th of... Db (?). I mean, don't get me wrong, the notes are correct, but maybe that chord is actually not a dominant 7th.

Is it ok to play Lydian b7 scale over the backdoor chord (bVII) when resolving to mayor (I)?? Or should I play regular mixolydian?? 🤔

well, is it called a ii V if it isn't one, but a IV bVII?
