290. Bending wood the LUTHIER's way #mtbitesize #makethings

Показать описание
Steam bending is a classic technique that softens wood fibers by adding moisture and heating them to around 200 degrees Fahrenheit, making the wood flexible. This method usually involves elaborate setups, but we can use a simpler approach inspired by luthiers, who traditionally bent wood by heating metal and placing it against the wood. To make it easy, we'll use a pipe and a torch.
I chose stainless steel for my pipe, as some setups use galvanized pipe which releases harmful zinc fumes when heated. My pipe sits securely between two supports made from 2x4s, which also helps keep it stable. I insulated the pipe with a stove gasket which protects the wood from getting hot and burning. This setup rests in my vice for easy access and control, and I've cut a small hole in the pipe to focus the heat exactly where the bend is needed.
Once the torch has heated the pipe to the point that water beads off its surface, I'm ready to start bending. Placing damp wood on top, the heat softens it quickly, allowing it to bend smoothly. The process works much like a steam box but is far simpler, making hot pipe bending a great technique for small shops or DIY projects.
