An innovative method was adopted to reduce the fault movement induced loads in the crushed zone of fault by cutting slots between the rings to create a hinge-like behavior in longitudinal direction. A 3D nonlinear analysis was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the method. In this numerical model the nonlinear behavior of concrete and soil, soil-structure interactions and detailed geometry of segmented lining were considered.
