I served in a Patrol squadron there in 1986. I remember when these houses were brought in on bardges.

My ex and I we’re stationed there in the early 80’s. He was in the Marine Corps. Their barracks was on the hill. The best base housing we ever had. Seems so strange to see it deserted & in shambles now. We made some of the best friends on that tour! Great memories

Back in 1979 I was a part of the naval fleet and we stopped here at Adak to refuel because at the time they had arranged a substation here. Me and my crewmates explored this entire island and I can definitely say that this place was eerie.

From an old retired miner: The two tunnels were driven at the same time and are for the purpose of air circulation. Air is forced down one and comes back up the other. The crossovers with walls are made at intervals for the air to flow. As the tunnels progress, these have to be sealed off (called stoppings) to make the air go on to the next crossover.

I used to live here as a kid in the 90s. It’s wild to see it like that!

Nice video, thanks. My father was stationed there in the late 40's to early 50's timeframe. He was in the Navy and was part of an operation that listened for very low frequency radio transmissions from the Russian and Japanese subs. My brother requested his service record and mysteriously, his tenure on Adak is NOT included. Have photos of him on the island though so there is no doubt.

Just purchased 3 of these homes for me and my family, got a job in the fueling dock. Got a couple things to do in the lower 48 first and then heading up.

That's a lot of wasted property with potential.

Thanks for posting this. I was just a teen dependent at the time but we lived there from late 1966 to 1968. House right below "Admin Hill". I wish you got video of that area.

Wow talk about creepy. Pretty crazy; a base and community just left abandoned and left to rot. Kind of reminded me of those videos where people sneak into the Chernobyl exclusion zone and walk through some of those old abandoned communities. Cool video 👍

I lived on Adak as a kid from 1957-60. To this day I remember the elementary school, roller skating rink, swimming pool, movie theater. Even had a Navy run TV station of one channel.

As I served in the Navy on Adak in 1986, I saw these preassembled homes being shipped in on barges. Now they only whisper.
