Vyckie Garrison, Founder of No Longer Qivering - Friendly Atheist Podcast EP 57

Vyckie Garrison was named American Atheists’ 2015 Atheist of the Year. She’s also the founding editor of No Longer Qivering, a website based upon the “quiverfull” lifestyle that she left years ago. (Why that spelling? Because, she says, there’s no “you” in quivering.)

Jessica spoke with Vyckie about how she left the movement made famous by the Duggar family, whether her children are still religious, and why patriarchal thinking hurts men as well as women.

Speaking of misogyny, the bible says that children are a blessing, but also that childbirth is a curse (thanks, Eve). So women get to repeatedly endure childbirth while men get the credit for owning the "blessings." I'm not even a woman and that sounds messed up.

I didn't start questioning the Bible as a moral authority until I took a Contemporary ethics course in college and realized fairly early on that "Because the Bible told me so" was not a valid argument. What I was surprised by at the end of the course was that you didn't need the Bible to be ethical or moral. That seems like such a duh thing now, but at the time it shook my world.

I'd like to suggest that Vyckie Garrison may need to drink a LOT more water - from the sticky crackling in her voice it sounds like she's dehydrated.  Unless this is a byproduct of a medicine that she's taking for her health issue.

I think you have a typo in the title and description, it says "Qivering."

Carolyn Jessop made an excellent case against patriarchy in "Escape". Men also want love and companionship from marriage but without mutual respect, that's not possible. It cheats both sexes.

I have heard the term "quiverfull Christian" before, yes, but I initially assumed that it meant QUIVERING in FEAR because they fear their God.

I'm wondering how she supported herself and all those children after she no longer published the Christian newspaper.
