Bad Oxygen Sensor Symptoms and Dangers

Is your "Check Engine Light" on? It may be a bad O2 Sensor. You don't want this to go too long or you'll be spending a ton more in car repairs, namely the Catalytic Converter will burn out, and those aren't cheap. You'll also be wasting gas and have a less efficient vehicle. So get that changed ASAP!

Make sure it gets discipline for being bad

Just don't let the shop order it and install it for you. Brought my car to the shop and they wanted $600 (parts and labor) to replace a single O2 sensor. I did my own research to order the correct sensor and the O2 sensor was only $35 (oem Denso brand). And I had them installed it for only ~$70 labor. Their excuse is that the genuine Mitsubishi O2 sensor is ~$400....bullshit.

The way he rolls the sensor back and forth reminds me of the old days when I would twist one up.

You're going to notice that the car will accelerate like crapp.

My 2017 Ford Focus just had a P0420 code. It was also burning through fuel by an increase of 40% and loss of power during acceleration. I spent about $80 at Autozone for a new bank1 sensor 1 sensor, saved about $100 installing it myself. My gas mileage increased back to normal and power was restored during acceleration. YouTube is definitely the people's University!!!

I found that constant rolling of the unit back and forth to be most entertaining... 👍😃

The problem is, an 02 sensor will get lazy/slow to respond long before it finally trips the CEL.

Can 02 Sensors start to go bad but not enough to throw an engine light on?

"It sends a message to the car to put more oxygen in".

That POS part can destroy your car. I hate modern cars and their reliance on these stupid sensors. Our cars are made by the Government EPA. I hate modern cars. They cost more than older cars. Where is the great improvement in cars? The cost of the minor improvements is great.

Is it possible that it goes bad all of a sudden? I just picked up my car today and an engine light came on and its gas mileage became about twice as worse, a general loss of power and a much more noticeable turbo sound (spool up sound and stustustu sound on release). I had this a while back but after a day or two the engine light came off and gas mileage was normal. My car is a 2004 B5 Passat(VW)

My 97 Ls merc tracer was having trouble surge idling when parked or stopped at red light for over a year with check engine light stay on until I replaced both O2 sensors.

Mine had no error codes but was running like crap, dealers wanted $250aud for one sensor alone so i found 2 new sensors myself for $20 each...car is now running like a rocket its a huge improvement

Your description of how an 02 sensor works is misleading. All it does is measure the amount of oxygen left in the exhaust, and compare it to the amount of oxygen in the atmosphere. It does not "tell the engine to add more oxygen". It signals the ECM or PCM that it has a rich or lean condition, and the ECM or PCM adjusts the amount of fuel added.

This disclaimer should be posted on all videos featuring engine codes.   Just because the light told you a sensor indicated something doesn't mean a sensor is bad.  perform tests on the affected system(s) to find the real culprit(s).
