Conventional wisdom is that we should raise expectations. The cliché, at least, is: high expectations, high performance. You know, the dream-it-and-you-can-do-it philosophy, the grit gurus who tell us to shed “I can’t” for “I can’t yet." The jury is still out on such elixirs’ effectiveness, but the chances are that it’s better to err on the side of high expectations, especially if a person is fragile, where “you’re a loser” will more likely yield despondency than “I’ll show that sonofabitch!”

On the other hand, lowering our expectations, for example, avoids our being disappointed in others and gives us a free pass when we succumb to human failings.

Think of how often we’re disappointed or even somehow blame ourselves when someone doesn’t keep their promise to us. If only we lowered our expectations.

Turning to you, think of how we beat ourselves up when we screw up. What a relief if we could at least modestly lower our expectations for ourselves.
