This New Electrode Expands Inside Your Skull

This new electrode is a big deal for brain-computer interfaces. Here’s why.

You might have seen interfaces controlling prosthetic limbs or converting brain waves into speech. Thing is, it’s pretty challenging to get these electrodes into people’s brains. Scientists typically use larger grids of electrodes, but that means removing at least an equal area of the skull through an invasive procedure called a craniotomy.

This new electrode design can be inserted through a much smaller hole, then expands inside your skull. Scientists are hoping this will help make it much safer to implant electrodes and use them to perform speech recognition, treat neurological disorders like epilepsy, assess brain injuries, or more.

Many saying they will not allow this implant on their skull, but i bet if you were the patient this can be boon for you.

My husband is facing the potential of an implanted device in the skull to help with his epilepsy, essentially as a last resort effort of preventing any further loss of functionality or independence. Something like this makes the prospect of such terrifying surgery much easier to digest

This is fascinating, but terrifying, lol.

I love how we're developing better ways to do medicine, specifically in lessoning the damage done by surgery, lowering the risk of surgery and overall increasing its effectiveness as a result

There are also a plan to put electrodes inside the blood vessels using endoscopy. The electrodes go in rolled up then unroll and line the blood vessel.

You gotta know when to hole them, know when to fold them.

I had ETV surgery for hydrocephalus back in 2007. It had the most cutting-edge tech so they didn’t have to remove a large piece of skull but just a small area. The neurosurgeon uses some resin-type substance to fill in the gap. It’s all good although I can still feel a divot where the surgery was done. This video is promising. I’m sure there have been advancements since 2007 as well! Thank you for your videos!

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me.

We live in a wonderful time, and we need to be grateful.
I had a device inserted into my heart through my groin recently to prevent blood clots. This allows me to stop taking blood thinners which I hated. It had not been invented when I started having A fib.

I think it'll be kind of cool. Seeing people With robotic arms and legs That actually worked like in science fiction.

I have plenty of free space in my brain for a BCI. You could fit an iMac G3 in there.

How would the brain react if you hooked it up to some kind of camera that can see more of the electromagnetic spectrum than humans can? Kinda like a mantis shrimp.

Like a resource the body can tap
It will find its own way to tap, or even convert to water and chemically access

The potential for this tech in other areas than neuroscience is also incredibly exciting. From non-invasive diagnostic procedures all the way out to infrastructure improvements, and maybe even space.

Ahh yes, craniotomy I had one before it was a great time. new techniques to avoid such invasive procedures is always a wonderful step!
