WHO I AM

Hello, I'm Jen Campbell. I'm an award-winning poet and bestselling author of twelve books, spanning short stories, poetry, picture books, and nonfiction.

My books for adults include Please Do Not Touch This Exhibit, The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night, The Girl Aquarium, The Bookshop Book, and The Sunday Times bestselling Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops series. My picture book trilogy Franklin and Luna, and my middle-grade book The Sister Who Ate Her Brothers, are published by Thames & Hudson. I've won both an Eric Gregory Award and the Jane Martin Poetry Prize, and my books have been translated into twenty languages.

I've worked in the publishing industry for over fifteen years, initially as a bookseller, and now as a freelance editor, content creator and disability advocate. I review books online, in print and on the radio. I run a Youtube channel where I talk about books, the history of fairy tales, and the representation of disability and disfigurement. I also offer online writing workshops and editorial services, give talks at schools, publishing companies, universities and book festivals on a variety of topics, and I run a book club for TOAST clothing.

Each Peach Pear Plum by the same authors as Peepo was my favourite book as a kid! Has the fun vibe of things in the background, and then the next page they're in the foreground. My Gran had it so whenever I would stay with her I would read it, including as a teenager, because the rhymes are just fun to say!

Honestly I still love it, maybe I should get myself a copy lol

If you are ever in the States, there is an Eric Carle Museum in western Massachusetts which is dedicated to children's book illustrations. Also, you can find Eric Carle books in other languages, which is a great way to introduce vocabulary.

Omg, what a trip down memory lane! I used to adore the German translation of „Peace at last“ when my father read it to me 🥹

Thank you Jen! So many great ideas for gifts to my friends’ kids! (Mine is almost 19, and I am not Eng native, so this is all very new and exciting for me, might keep some for myself though😂)

Thank you for compiling this brilliant list. There were quite a few on there that we own, have read or heard of, or have gifted to other people, but many that we hadn’t 🥰 I definitely need to buy The Girl Who Loves Bugs for my little wildling. She’d love it.

Oh my goodness! I though it was just me who felt that about '10 Little fingers and 10 little toes'. It was at a toddler group I went to, but no one else seemed bothered so thought I was being OTT. 'Ableist nonsense' is a much better way of describing how I felt about it.

I want to recomment „the book of dirt“ from Piotr Socha. The illustrations are so good and also the text.
