Why does Star Wars begin with "A LONG TIME AGO in a galaxy far far away"? Isn't this setting SCI FI? Why set a futuristic story in the past?

When I was a kid, I literally asked my parents this question. They told me “It means that it already happened, so don’t go whining when you see someone you like lose a fight” because I always thought that good guys were inherently stronger than bad guys and would whine a bunch when things didn’t go my (the good guys) way

One of the novelizations expands on this by saying “it’s already happened, and nothing can be done to change it.”

That explains the time, but not the “galaxy far far away”. Loved it! Keep em coming!

My putting it in the past, the story becomes timeless. Nobody will ask "don't they have smartphones in the future?" because it is not the future. The technology they have in this universe are theirs, not ours. The evolution of technology in our world does not break immersion in this one, no matter how much it progress.

Also worth noting it is a commentary but of the past, specifically drawing from the Vietnam war

It was such an enigmatic line to me, but it was mandatory to start every damn movie.

By the time the light from that galaxy would reach us, the light we see would be the past

Is the reverse also possible? For example, Dune is set far into the future however there is a lot less emphasis on technology as compared to let's say... the culture, the houses. Even the sandworms being animals and not particularly machines.

To me it’s always been a the wheel keeps turning kind of thing. Both narrative wise, where the same stories will always take place no matter what era, but also in an evolutionary sense, where empires and societies will collapse on themselves and the civilisation is back to square one. „I don’t know what WW3 will be fought with, but WW4 will use sticks and stones“ sort of deal

The way I see it, this framing evokes ideas of legends and mythology. Much like Lord of the Rings serves as a mythology for England, Star Wars can serve as a mythology for Americans, or whoever you want to include. George himself has said that Star Wars was a response to the moral grayness he was seeing in cinema at the time, wanting to go back to something hopeful with clear morality. It's a simple parable everyone can understand and learn from.

I would argue that mythology is hardly benevolent by default. There are plenty of nasty myths that end in evil prevailing. Mythology, rather, is the representation of those constant forces that interact within each of us and within our lives. Mythology is the hero's journey, is the archetypes of good and evil and cowardice and courage. Mythology is the collection of true stories that each of us are born with, simply personified and articulated.

when as a kid i whated the movies in chronological order I always had the idea of a tragedy that has played out, no wishing will safe it, but hope will still prevail

I mean, I have always just assumed it was due to how light travels. The further something is away the longer light will take to reach it. If we were to look through an advanced telescope at other planets in other parts of the universe, we’d only be seeing things that happened in the past.
