Advanced Bionics Naida Q90 Cochlear Implant Review. Dr. Cliff Olson, Audiologist and founder of Applied Hearing Solutions in Anthem Arizona, discusses the features of the Naida Q90 Cochlear Implant.

Advanced Bionics is one of a few cochlear implant manufacturers. They are owned by Sonova who also owns Phonak and Unitron. Sonova really knows how to treat hearing loss and it shows in their cochlear implants.

Here are 5 things that make the Naida Q90 cochlear implant unique:

1. They have 4 micrphones on their processors - They have the traditional front and back microphones like traditional hearing aids, but they also have a headpiece mic and what is called a T-Mic. The T-Mic was originally designed to be used for the phone because it sits directly over your ear canal, but Advanced Bionics soon realized that it was beneficial in other situations. Because it uses the pinna effect, it helps you perform better in a background noise situation.

2. The Naida Link - Cochlear implants work better when the user has a hearing aid on the non-implanted ear. Advanced Bionics takes it a step further by linking their partner hearing aid to the Cochlear Implant. This improves the ability of both devices because they can share information back and forth.

3. The CROS Transmitter - Not only does the Naida have a compatible hearing aid, it also has a compatible CROS. If your non-implanted ear doesn't hear well, you could just take the sound on that side of your head and transfer it to your Cochlear Implant side. This will remove the "Head Shadow Effect" and allow you to hear sounds on your non-implanted side much better.

4. Current Steering Technology - The Electrode array that is implanted inside of your cochlea has 16 electrodes to stimulate the auditory nerve. However, because each electrode can be given a different amount of power, the Naida Q90 can provide 120 phantom electrodes to stimulate the auditory nerve more precisely. And as you know, when it comes to hearing, precision is everything.

5. It is Upgradable - The implanted portion of your Cochlear Implant shouldn't be removed and replaced unless absolutely necessary. Fortunately, it doesn't have to because only 30% of the chip inside of the implant is being utilized so future firmware and software upgrades shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you for posting this video. I have a Q90 CI for 3 years now and also have the Naida Link which is I think 2 years. I forget how life changing the CI had been for me. Without the CI I can only hear buzzing. Image going from being pretty much deaf to hearing fairly well in all situations. People ask me about he CI every so often as my CI is very visible. Mark

Thank you, great information! I am having CI surgery in the spring and chose AB with the Q90 and CROS option. It can’t come fast enough, as I’ve had total bilateral hearing loss and vestibular loss since December. I think it is great that the implant is upgradable and can be used with Phonak ALDs and eventually SWORD!

I have both Naida Q70 and Q90, they both are decent sound processors, and I like the slim form factor. I can't wait to possibly get a pair of Naida M90 sound processors (been waiting for the Bluetooth connectivity for ever since I got the ancient Auria sound processor as my first BTE sound processor, and I honestly prefer BTE sound processor).

My question is can AB help remove tinnitus? I have had severe tinnitus for 26 years. Sounds like a screeching smoke alarm. I hate it with all my being. Looking for technology that can cancel it out.

I have an AB Q70 and can upgrade my hearing aid. I’m hoping the Newest Phonak with a Roger (for the Q70) will work best for me. My audiologist isn’t recommending this. I don’t know why that might be the case from what info I have been able to gather so far.

Do you have a video about using AB CIs and Phonak aids?

Hi Cliff, thanks for the video, always professional and clear. What is your experience withthe phantom electrodes? it sounds a little bit marketing to me but i am sure sonova did something interesting, it is just that i´d like to hear from peers.

This great! Even after being implanted a month ago and activated 3 weeks ago, I am still curious and looking for more information on how to improve my CI. I do have one question though, can you make a video on how the Naida Link Hearing aid works specifically. So I know what functions are available with it and how I can maximize my hearing with it. Thank you.

I received the mail from AB, somewhere in the spring, saying that they would end their support with q70 by September 2019. I'm also in a need of an upgrade as I got my q70 about more than 5 years back. I'm hoping this might be the upgrade i need.

I just received notification from AB that I will be getting the new Naida CI Q90 processor with Bluetooth. I have a new car that is also Bluetooth compatible. I don't have a cell phone that has Bluetooth. What phone would be best for me to purchase. There are so many and I don't know how to choose the best one. I don't use many apps so that's data is not that important to me as I use my laptop. thank you for any additional info. you can provide.

You mentioned that the Naida CROS was used when the person had no hearing in the other ear. Does that mean that it wouldn't be good for me, as I have a profound loss in that ear so I hear some
