The striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena) is a shy hyena species native to Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. It’s preferred habitat is deserts, but it also likes savannas, scrublands, and dry forest. A mainly nocturnal species with a powerful bite, the striped hyena is primarily a scavenger, meaning that it feeds mainly on dead animals. However, it also sometimes eats small animals, eggs, and sometimes plant matter.
Striped hyenas are mainly solitary foragers, but they live a secret social life. They basically only ever meet up at the den. Every clan is led by a dominant breeding pair. They are the only hyenas in that clan that are able to breed and have cubs. Few animals would ever challenge a large adult striped hyena. However, male leopards, large packs of grey wolves, and lions are usually able to beat an adult hyena. Striped hyenas are territorial, and when it comes to marking their territorial boundaries, it takes a lot of finesse and dedication. They use scent to mark their territory.
Striped hyenas are not a very vocal species. Their most well-known sound they make is a low and hair-raising growl that’s made when facing a rival hyena or trying to intimidate an enemy. Striped hyenas are Near Threatened on the endangered species list. They’re a heavily persecuted species, with approximately 12,000 adult striped hyenas left in the wild. Their primary threats are habitat loss and fragmentation and persecution.
