Electrical Engineer here, this is true. An event like this would cause most transformers to enter magnetic saturation and then heat up and then eventually burn up the windings. If we lost all of our transformers on the grid, it would take decades to replace them all since we produce transformers at such a slow rate.

The likely reason for all the electrical issues in 1859 was that at that time and for many years afterward they didn’t know about the function and importance of grounding in electrical systems. When the energy is generated it has to go somewhere. Present day grounding is probably why these solar events don’t have the catastrophic effects that they did in the past. It’s not luck. It’s an understanding of grounding and having it. In electrical code proper grounding is vital for safety and is still an evolving concept.

As an educated electrician I just want to say: you don't even realize how ridiculous it is to continuously run a telegraph entirely from the storm's current. Firstly do you know why coil exists? Because one wire doesn't induce much in either direction, but stacking them together is adding them up together. The telegraph wire is, well, a line of two wires as far as I'm aware. Plus if you've ever seen an electrical transformer from any device you'll notice they're tightly packed around a piece of iron. That is to keep the magnetic flow in that small space. That magnetic core will have easily 10, 000 times greater magnetic field intensity within them than the surroundings, that's what we have to run our devices. Imagine all that, but instead of being the size of a horseshoe the entire planet is bathed in this field. And add to that the fact that the power in our outlets is specifically made alternating because only a changing magnetic field will induce current. A natural magnetic field will fluctuate, but not very much which means this magnetic field must be incredibly massive. Also if it has the power to induce currents strong enough to run devices in a wire now thing of the steel construction of a building! You touch a random railing and get fried like you touched the phase on a power outlet. Everywhere on the planet. From a process probably hundreds of thousands of times less efficient than what we use in our electronics. The sheer amount of brute strength of that storm is biblical.
